Pacific Coast University School of Law was founded in 1927, before the formation of the California State Bar. The Law School was the only portion of the university to survive the Great Depression. Throughout its history, Pacific Coast University
has opened its doors to everyone. Despite the fact that women made up only 2.7% of the legal profession in 1963, PCU was graduating 30% or more women per year. Today, PCU continues its mission to provide an excellent legal education to students of diverse ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds. As a non-profit school, PCU affords rare opportunities to students who might ordinarily be at a disadvantage. Many of our students work full-time and raise a family while earning their law degree. PCU maintains its policy of keeping costs at a minimum to help make a law education available to students with limited funds. Pacific Coast University offers a four-year course of studies with two schedule options. Along with the subjects covered in the General Bar Examination, the curriculum includes courses on Legal Research, Writing and Lawyering Skills, Trial Techniques, and Pleading and Practice. In order to provide the best education to each student, PCU limits the number of students per class to 50. Most of our students go on to practice right In the community, working in areas of civil practice including family law, property disputes and landlord/tenant matters, or entering criminal law as public defenders and deputy prosecutors.
