I'd like to share a rather unusual and free aces prevention resource...parenting tips bumper stickers! Advancing Parenting, a Camarillo, CA nonprofit, produces parenting tips bumper stickers and makes them available at no cost to schools, businesses, organizations, clinics, and individuals. There are fifty-one in a set and each bumper sticker communicates a parenting behavior or practice generally recognized as supporting the healthy development of children. Just one will be read thousands of times!

Bumper stickers are a unique and powerful way to educate everyone about parenting and prevent child abuse five, ten, twenty, fifty years down the road. At stoplights drivers and passengers point, smile, and nod. Conversations begin and often a phone is used to take a photo of the sticker right at the stoplight. Presumably, they are being shared on social media. It's wonderful to see!

Sets of the stickers can be put in holders and placed on counters and tables so folks can select one or more for their cars. Visit www.advancingparenting.org to request this free resource. Use a computer...our website is not optimized for phones. Please share.

We are pleased and excited that you have chosen to visit us on Facebook.

Research @ The Beach is featuring two of our faculty: Dr. Roudi Nazarinia Roy and Dr. Tiffany L. Brown. Congratulations on your new research. "In working directly with fathers of color, Dr. Roy and Dr. Brown have discovered that many of these fathers experience a lack of social support and report limited access to the resources needed to build positive fatherhood trajectories. Their research also identified critical components of successful fatherhood education programs and the need to focus on supporting men with relationship building skills to assist them in successfully navigating their co-parent relationship, as well as, provide them with tools to access support from family and community resources." This morning, I was so proud and honored to again host Justin Rudd as my “Professor of the Day” at CSULB. Justin spoke to my students about his important work as Director of Community Action Team (CAT), which seeks to promote social well-being among the public. CAT is a non-profit umbrella organization that includes Long Beach’s 30-Minute Beach Cleanup, Belmont Shore Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest, 4th of July Kids’ Bike Parade, Haute Dog Contests, and the Long Beach Turkey Trot (among many other worthwhile and noteworthy events). Justin, my Long Beach State students and I are so grateful for the work you do and the generous time you took today to speak with us. You are an inspiration to so many who know and love you. Thank you. – Peter

2021 Graduate Spotlights: Family & Consumer Sciences 05/18/2021

"The Department of Family & Consumer Sciences is currently the largest department at CSULB, so it comes as no surprise that the graduating seniors of 2021 within the department have advocated for and served the community across a broad spectrum of organizations, companies, educational institutions, and government entities. In their mission to prepare leaders for the family and consumer sciences professions, the department focuses on teaching, scholarship, and service to and about individuals, families, and communities in a diverse, dynamic society.

While all CHHS graduates are worth celebrating, here are a few graduates whose stories stand out because of their courage to overcome challenges, follow their dreams, and have a positive impact on the lives of others."

2021 Graduate Spotlights: Family & Consumer Sciences When we asked graduating seniors why they choose to pursue a career in health and human services, their answers all had one thing in common: CHHS students have a desire to give back to their community.

Issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are central to the core mission of FCS and CSULB. Over the past few months, several of our FCS lecturers have stepped up and demonstrated tremendous leadership in the area of DEI.

We would like to recognize James Childers (NUTR), Brooke Dekofsky (NUTR), Arlene Nelson (CDFS), Jodi Morinaka (CDFS), and Alexandra Wilkinson (GERO) for their work in supporting a collaborative academic community, where multiple perspectives and diverse ways of living/being are valued and celebrated. They have gone above and beyond to engage in the important work of creating a welcoming environment where all have the opportunity to thrive and succeed. We thank them for their service and are grateful to have them on our DEI team.
