"I was born 27 weeks early. I was born on December 27th 1989. When I was born, I was premature. I weighed about one pound and 11 ounces. I was born with a eye condition called retinopathy prematurity. This condition occurs when you have too much oxygen in one eye, and as a 2 month old baby, I was visually impaired. Due to this visual impairment, my life and my family has never stopped me from doing anything I ever wanted. I feel very honored to be at Cal State University Long Beach getting my degree in Communications and also perusing the mediation certificate. As a person with disabilities, never let anyone or anything stop you from doing anything you want or like!" -Chandi

"As we celebrate Disability Pride Month we express our gratitude for the many disability rights advocates and activist who moved the nation towards access in their bold and unapologetic pursuit of the passage of the ADA. We embrace a history of Disability activism in our country including the Section 504 sit ins, and the events like the Washington D.C. Capital Crawl. We recognize the many contributions people with disabilities have made, and continue to make in our communities.
We celebrate solidarity our identities as Disabled people acknowledging our beauty and complexity. It's in our pride, that we also look to the future. There is much more work to do to ensure people with disabilities have meaningful access to inclusive and equitable employment, transportation, healthcare, housing and the right to be the authors of our own stories. Disability Pride Month is a time to recommit ourselves to the principles of Disability Justice and become renewed in our efforts to carry forward movement that embraces the diversity of our lived experiences.
As a Disabled student perusing my Masters in Public Policy and Administration, I am grateful to be working toward this change. May we continue to work collectively, intentionally and boldly for the disability community all year long." -Rebecca
