Cal State Long Beach alumni and dedicated donors, Jo Anne Charmack ‘78 and Scott Charmack ‘72, were motivated to establish a scholarship for bright but under-resourced engineering students at CSULB. For Madison Fabella and Fozhan Ghamsari, receiving the Charmack scholarship was not only about the money but was also about the vote of confidence it represented.

Such scholarships continue to support The Beach’s mission to create a national model for student achievement, empowerment and equity, a priority of the comprehensive fundraising campaign.

The assignment was to design a 12,000- to 15,000-square-foot office that could support the changing behaviors and expectations of the modern worker.

The 51st annual CSULB Pow Wow returned this past weekend! Thousands of people joined in a special celebration of Native American culture. Participants listened to drumming and singing, watched dancers perform in colorful outfits and regalia, ate delicious frybread and grilled meats, and browsed jewelry, pottery, textiles, beadwork and clothing.

“It’s just neat to see those Native students who are here, all of whom are alumni, and all these young kids are here,” said Craig Stone, director of American Indian Studies and a longtime participant and organizer of the powwow. “For us, this is a big reunion.”

Join us this weekend for the 51st annual CSULB Pow Wow! The largest university-based powwow west of the Mississippi River will return March 9 and 10 to the Upper Campus Quad.

“Last year, we focused on older people, the elders,” said Craig Stone, director of American Indian Studies and a longtime participant and organizer of the powwow. “Now with this new 51st one, we’re representing the younger, next generation.”

For Artist Knox, higher education has been a transformational experience from incarceration to receiving a bachelor’s degree. Knox, who is now pursuing a Master of Social Work at Cal State Long Beach, was among several speakers from CSULB who participated in Super Sunday events on Feb. 25.

“My life after the degree, so many doors have opened,” Knox said. “There’s not enough time in the day and there’s not enough of me to commit to all the opportunities.”

This year’s Super Sunday is set for Feb. 25! Cal State Long Beach leaders will spread an important message from the CSU to Black churches in Long Beach and Compton: A Beach degree is accessible, affordable and life changing.

“Our annual Super Sunday outreach efforts are crucial to Cal State Long Beach, the CSU and the communities we serve,” CSULB President Jane Close Conoley said. “CSU Super Sunday is an effective way to share our story, help potential students understand that college is affordable, and convey that it is never too early to prepare for college – or too late to return."

Students like first-year Cal State Long Beach accounting major Adriana Sosa-Reyes are receiving an insider's view of the trade industry thanks to a partnership with the Center for International Trade & Transportation (CITT) at CSULB and the Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics at Cabrillo High School.

“Growing up, I really didn’t think about it much. I knew that when we would travel on the freeway, there would be all these trucks,” said Sosa-Reyes, who went through the program as a Cabrillo student. “It’s very informative to learn more about what the port does .... It’s a very cool experience to learn how business works.”

Such partnerships and investments support The Beach’s objective of shaping California's future workforce, one priority of the university's campaign.

CSULB is among nine CSUs that comprise the Ocean Studies Institute and served as the administrative CSU campus within the OSI.

“It’s something you don’t get in a normal class,” Emily Hibma, a fourth-year student, said. “I didn’t know what to expect. It’s awesome to see this stuff and then do it.”
