CSULB students immersed themselves in summer study abroad programs in South Africa, China, Germany, France and Italy. After their return, students like interior design major Hailey Bisbee shared their once-in-a-lifetime global classroom experiences.

“I have proved to myself that I can travel, live and work internationally,” she wrote about her trip to Cape Town. “I can hike, swim, learn, dance, eat, travel, work, laugh, love and cry in a 24-hour span.”

When does play turn into science and practice? At the free SEE US Succeed! Camp on campus, Beach student teachers provided STEM lessons to children — many unhoused or in foster care — while putting their classroom skills to use.

Professor Emeritus Laura Henriques founded the camp as an offshoot of her tuition-based Young Scientists Camp.

Thanks to a gift from Tom '68 & Carrie Corbett, Guardian Scholars will have a dedicated campus space for foster youth. The donation also will increase the Corbett Guardian Scholars Endowed Fund for scholarships, experiential learning and other activities.

“Our motivation for supporting foster youth programs is rooted in the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of the circumstances they were born into,” the Corbetts said.

CSULB students coached high school debaters at Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate League's Summer Debate Institute. For criminal justice major Daniel Medina, it’s a full-circle moment. He participated in LAMDL back in high school, which inspired him to go to The Beach.
