The United State of Women
Today is , in which Black women on average FINALLY earn what white, non-Hispanic men made last year alone. Here are 10 statistics around .
Artwork created in collaboration with Bee Harris.
1. In 2017, Black women’s labor force participation rate was 60.3%, compared with roughly 56% for white women, Asian American women & Latinx women. But this higher labor force participation rate has not translated into higher earnings.
2. A Black woman working full time make 61 cents for every dollar a White man makes. White women, on the other hand, make 77 cents for every dollar a White man makes.
3. Black women earn an estimated $946,120 less than white, non-Hispanic men over the course of a 40-year career.
4. At the current rate, Black women will have to wait until the year 2119 to earn with white men. (That's too long to wait.)
5. Black women have raised only .0006% of all venture funding since 2009, according to Project Diane.
6. 64% of Black mothers are the primary or sole breadwinners for their family.
7. Black moms make just 54¢ for every $1 paid to white dads.
8. In 2017, Black people with disabilities had the highest jobless rate compared to disabled Hispanic, white, and Asian people.
9. The average annual income of a Black trans person in the U.S. is less than $10,000, according to a report from the LGBTQ Poverty Collaborative. It's likely even lower for Black trans women.
10. More than 1 in 3 Americans are not aware of the pay gap between Black women and white men. 53% of Americans are not aware of the pay gap between Black women and white women, according to .

Celebrate the Equal Pay Act by taking action for fair pay!
On June 10, 1963, AAUW members gathered in the oval office to watch President John F. Kennedy sign the Equal Pay Act into law, making it illegal for employers to pay men and women differently for the same work. Over the past half century, this groundbreaking law has helped make significant strides towards pay equity. But despite our advances, women working full time in the United States still make on average just 80 percent of what men are paid.
It’s long past time we closed the gender pay gap, and that means Congress must take action on additional reforms.
Click here to join AAUW in commemorating the 55th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act by urging your member of Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act!
The Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 819/H.R. 1869) would take meaningful steps forward to ensure that the promise of the Equal Pay Act is fulfilled, including:
preventing employers from punishing workers who discuss their wages,
strengthening penalties for equal pay violations,
enabling effective enforcement of laws against pay discrimination through data collection,
prohibiting employers from relying on salary history to set wages,
closing loopholes that allow employers to justify paying workers unfairly, and
supporting negotiation skills training programs for women and girls.
The gender pay gap is persistent and it can only be addressed if women have the tools they need to challenge discrimination and employers have the tools they need to comply with the law.
Tell your members of Congress: it’s time to strengthen existing equal pay protections and pass the Paycheck Fairness Act!

Guess What Women Couldn't Do in 1960?
stars.topix.com A lot of things, it turns out.
In those days, there was a lot of blocks weighing against blacks. I am in awe to learn about the unstoppable determination of this young girl up and into her adulthood. If she could do it then, what is stopping us now? Believe in yourself.
to orator and actress, Henrietta Vinton Davis, born in 1860. Davis's father and stepfather both died within the first 10 years of her life, and she was raised primarily by her mother. When she was 15, Davis passed the state exam for teaching certification and began working as a school teacher. In 1878, when she was in her late teens, she became the first African American woman to work in the Office of the Recorder of Deeds and was an assistant to Frederick Douglass. She began honing her dramatic and elocution skills, making her debut as a performer in 1883. Davis was also active in the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League(ACL). She left her performing career to work for ACL full-time. (Photo Credit: New York Public Library)
