We are proud to announce Peter Schilla as our third honoree for our upcoming 25th Anniversary Gala!

Peter Schilla, a champion for over 50 years as an advocate for the rights of and social justice, has been a critical leader in the English learner policy and advocacy community. Peter’s achievements as a legislative advocate are many and include the passage of AB 2284 (1972) which appropriated $5 million for bilingual education pilot projects. In 1979, Peter fought for AB 507. This law mandated education when more than twenty speakers of the same language are in a single grade level.

More recently, Peter served as a consultant for Californians Together! His vision helped provide the framework for the development and implementation of the English Learners Leadership and Legacy Initiative. These are just a few of Peter’s many accomplishments in service of education. That’s why we are proud to honor him on our special night.

We’re helping to advance education equity through collaborative partnerships.

“By valuing students’ home language and English language development simultaneously, ensures best practice for identifying and supporting early learners academically while also respecting and preserving language and culture. Providing a consistent manner for identifying dual language learners in the early learning and care system is essential for ensuring leaders can make informed decisions that will support students throughout their academic journeys." - Martha Hernandez, Executive Director of Californians Together

Parents of English learners in the dark about their children’s language progress 10/12/2023

"Yosadara Carbajal Salmerón was always a very involved parent, from the time her children were in Head Start.

She would volunteer in the classroom and sign up for parent committees throughout elementary and middle school.

But Carbajal Salmerón didn’t realize that her children, who attend school in Pomona Unified, were still considered English learners after years of school, or how that might affect them."

Families shouldn't be in the dark about how their children are progressing in school—but many families have no idea where their students are in their language development.

Zaidee Stavely reports on a new Parent Organization Network campaign to promote better communication between families and districts.

Parents of English learners in the dark about their children’s language progress Parents often rely on report cards to monitor progress and don't always understand what their children need to do to be reclassified as fluent.

Teachers of recently arrived immigrant students to get help under new law 10/10/2023

NEW in EdSource: “We were both looking at each other like deer in headlights and you could sense this was not something that any of us were prepared for.”

Newcomers are students who recently arrived in US classrooms. Quotes like the one above are not uncommon as teachers often feel over the heads when it comes to supporting their unique needs.

This weekend, Governor Newsom signed into law, which will provide teachers much-needed guidance and data for understanding and meeting the needs of newcomers.

More from Zaidee Stavely:

Teachers of recently arrived immigrant students to get help under new law Assembly Bill 714, recently signed into law, requires the California Department of Education to report the number of newcomer students and offer best practices for teaching them.

I’m proud to announce that Governor Gavin Newsom signed my bill today! The State Seal of Biliteracy is an important way for California to recognize the high achievement of multi-lingual learners. Students of all language backgrounds who meet high levels of achievement in English and an additional language should have equitable opportunities to earn the State Seal of Biliteracy. I appreciate the Governor’s commitment to uplifting California’s multilingual learners by providing all student with expanded yet rigorous opportunities to achieve the Seal.

Californians Together is proud to announce Dr. Patricia Gándara as an honoree at our upcoming 25th Anniversary Gala!

She also chairs the Working Group on Education for the University of California-Mexico Initiative, a partnership between the University of California and institutions of higher education in Mexico aimed at addressing mutual interests in public policy. Dr. Gándara’s scholarly contributions are incredibly valuable for understanding the landscape of English learner education.
