I want to share something that has quietly been on my heart for the past year 💛

Last year, I received a photo of the simple crosses marking the graves of my great-grandparents, Lawrence and Barbara Mitch Gloeckner. They were placed there years ago by a son or grandson when the family didn’t have the means for more.

Seeing that stayed with me.

Since then, I’ve been looking into ways to honor them more fully — something respectful, lasting, and meaningful. I’ve now received permission from Sacred Heart Cemetery in Pomeroy to add a small memorial to their crosses.

This will take some time to put together. I’m working on creating a weatherproof photo and a QR code that will share their story so it can live on for future generations.

I’ll keep you all updated as this comes together, and when the time comes to place the memorial, I would love for anyone who feels connected to join me.

This feels like a small but important way to remember where we came from. 💛 sent this today to the Gloeckner Family page and wanted to share with my friends at QHGS.

Dear Members,

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our longtime member, Janice Miller, on February 18, 2026.

Janice faithfully served our society for many years, including her dedicated work preparing and publishing our newsletter. Her time, care, and commitment helped keep our members informed and connected, and her contributions will not be forgotten.

She is survived by her husband, two sons, and three grandchildren. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at 1:30 pm at Forest Lawn Cypress (doors open at 1:00 pm) in the Little Chapel.

Please keep Janice’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time as we remember and honor her life and service to our society.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Diana

Two interesting free on-line resources for New York State research:

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) hosts on-line presentations, records them, and makes them available on-line. One would think they’d restrict access to members, but many (those with an open padlock logo) are apparently available to anyone! The list of presentations is at https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/webinars

The Northern New York Library Network hosts a New York State Historic Newspapers site which has digitized collections of NY newspapers indexed by date, title, collection, and county, covering all of New York State. If your ancestors lived there – or even passed through – it might be worth a look! It’s at https://www.nyshistoricnewspapers.org/

This picture is not to document what's on these stones--they are in the Henderson, Illinois, cemetery and documented on FindAGrave. It's to remind you to look at adjacent stones. Is it a coincidence these five stones in a row all look the same? Of course it is not.

Don't neglect to take pictures of this type when photographing stones. In this case it's not just the proximity that is a clue, but the style of the stone as well.

A clue is a clue.

These are not my relatives.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars - live and recorded genealogy webinars 01/23/2026

Every generation, your autosomal DNA gets diluted. Jumbled up. Harder to trace.
Y-DNA doesn't work that way. It passes down intact—father to son to son. No dilution, almost no change.
No guessing which line a match comes from. Just clean, traceable inheritance.
Blaine Bettinger—the guy who literally helped pioneer genetic genealogy—just taught part 1 of a masterclass on advanced Y-DNA evidence.
He walks through his own family's results, busts a major myth about STR testing, and explains when Y-DNA is your only option for breaking through brick walls.
It's free until January 28. Then it goes behind a paywall.

P.S. Want the fuller picture on DNA testing? Blaine's book The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy has been on my shelf for years. Highly recommend.
