Why English Majors are the Hot New Hires After years of emphasis being put on math and engineering degrees, here's why English majors may be in high demand.

WRITING CONTEST: DIG Magazine is now accepting scary story submissions for its October issue. The winner will be published in the October issue of DIG Magazine and will receive a $15 ITunes Gift Card. Email submissions to Vivian Gatica at [email protected]. All submissions must be received by 10am Sunday, August 25th. Stories will be posted on Facebook as they are received, and the author whose story receives the most ‘likes’ by September 11th will be the winner. The person who ‘likes’ your story must ‘like’ the DIG Magazine page in order for his or her vote to count.

Just FYI for those of you who are planning to visit campus today: The University Police Department will be conducting an Active Shooter/Mass Casualty Drill on campus from 9:30-11:30am. Upper-campus will be impacted until 2pm.

NEED 4 UNITS IN THE FALL? Take ENGL 270B with Professor Dennis López on Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30-7:20pm. Read classic texts of American literature alongside often-overlooked radical protest and multi-ethnic literatures.

Program Council will be hosting tryouts for the Slam Poetry Team on Monday, September 23rd, and Tuesday, September 24th from noon to 5pm in the University Student Union (USU 307). NOTE: You only have to attend one of the dates to try out.

The team is a group of five students that will compete in regional and national competitions at ACUI (Association of College Unions International).
