CSULB BFA Interior Design senior and junior students participated in the LAAIA ACLA 2026 'Design Like a Girl Day' which was a 2 day event held at The Smith Group where they hosted activities for young female students who are interested in the various design and construction fields.

The activities included various activities and lectures. One such activity was attending a construction site that had bingo cards of different structural elements that allowed the “designers” (the young students, aka the 'girls') to identify the different elements that were discussed in the lecture.

Our students assisted the girls in designing their own pavilion based on using the structural elements they learned in order to make sure their pavilion had the support it needed. Our students supported the process while encouraging them to take the lead in their ideas and designs.

The day was spent engaging with young girls who are interested in design through creative activities and a brief introduction to architecture, which made the experience feel both interactive and meaningful.

At the end, the girls presented their work in front of their parents, and one
could truly see how proud they were. Super fun event for all. We look forward to participating in next year's event.

Our students who particpated:
Camille Davis
Camila Foster
Megan Jess
Gladys D. Ramirez
Paige Benson
Sahara Daily
Christina Dwe
Bree Cubbage

Happy and Proud to announce that CSULB BFA Interior Design Student, Yanira Rivas has won 1st Place in the 2025 Steelcase NEXT Student Design Competition.

Yanira was the only non graduate level student in the Top 5 Finalists as she is a junior in our program who is blessed with intellect, optimism, a caring and selfless heart, an immigrants passion to succeed and a fierce yet methodical work ethic which is fierce, and years ahead of her junior standing.

My faculty colleague, Lecturer Britt Griffith was blessed to have had another very talented student, An Kida, who was in the Top 10.

Our other 2 students who represented CSULB BFA Interior Design, Megan Jess and Julie Tran, also finished in the Top 25% in North America (universities from USA, Canada, and Mexico participated).

Our core studio faculty consisting of Professor Von Dominguez, Lecturer Britt Griffith, and Lecturer Alec Johnson, and myself (Professor Eduardo Perez) are ALL CRITICAL parts of our team and we collectively share this W.

We have 3 - 1st Place Award Winners since 2020 and numerous Top 10 / Finalists / Semi Finalists/ Honorable Mentions as well.

CSULB BFA INTERIOR DESIGN!!! LIKE NO OTHER! GO BEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS. I attached a condensed version of Yanira's project, photo of her, and photo of her with the other 4 finalists (in front of the FLW home that they had a private dinner in), and lastly, a photo of her studio mates that absolutely adore her.

PSS. Lastly, While Yanira was in Michigan (and in the airport and on the flight), she was working on a deadline for a project that was due yesterday 2/26 - she arrived in LA in the late evening on 2/25 - yes, she is special indeed.

This past fall, Britt Griffith and I had our 2 BFA Junior Interior Design Studios participate in the 13th Annual NEXT Steelcase Student Competition where we were allowed to submit 2 students from each studio for the competition.

All 4 of our students made the first round of professional judging, placing them in the 'Final 68' out of 1,700 student participants from across the country, Canada and Mexico.

Last week we found out these 4 students were in the Top 4% of competitors.

Earlier this week, we had 3 of our students make the next cut which placed them in the 'Final 29', the top 1.7% of competitors.

This past week we found out that 2 of the 3 students had made the Top 10:

An Kida was recognized with an Honorable Mention Award!

Yanira Rivas-Ramos was selected as a Semi-Finalist (Top 5) and will fly to Michigan in February and present her project in front of the professional jury!!!! (We will upload her project AFTER the final professional jury in February)

We wish to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of Julie Tran who finished in the Final 68 students, Top 4% in the nation!

We also wish to acknowledge the equally passionate and hard work by Megan Jess who finished in the Final 29 students, Top 1.7% in the nation!

We are extremely proud of all 4 of these students, as well as, all of their classmates as the character demonstrated through this very challenging program (the toughest yet) and the professionalism exhibited from start to finish is one that we all cherish and are forever proud of and are endemic to the BFA Interior Design Program.

The final in person judging will take place in February and we will know the winner on Friday February 27th - fingers crossed for more good news.
