Happy Earth Day! Let's celebrate our planet's beauty and renew our commitment to protecting it. From the first Earth Day in 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded in response to growing public concern over pollution's effects on health and the environment in the late 1960s and early 1970s. President Richard Nixon proposed its creation in his 1970 State of the Union address, officially established on December 2, 1970, through an executive order. The EPA consolidated various federal environmental responsibilities into one agency enforcing environmental laws and regulations. Its mandates include setting and enforcing air and water quality standards, managing hazardous waste, regulating pesticide and chemical usage, and protecting endangered species.

Curtis and Diego just won the American Debate Association’s national championship, ranking #3 in the nation. They won every single round. The last time a team did that was 8 years ago!
Diego said: “Before I joined, I was a really bad student. I didn’t know how to study or write. I failed a bunch of classes in high school. It taught me research skills and professional writing and how to organize my ideas. It also helped me in professional settings and keeping my grades up.”
Curtis said: “My major (Africana Studies) helps me combine the two views and see the way my culture views certain topics. It’s also helped with researching and writing and in professional and academic settings. It’s really important to put debate leagues in low-income areas.”
Cooper said: “They exceeded those goals. They’re now top 3 in the nation. I pushed them to make new ideas. I understand why college debate is seen as not for everyone, but people become more connected to networks. Opens doors to jobs and internships. Gain nuanced skills. Helps you write papers, take notes. Exposes you to a lot of opportunities that high school debate doesn’t. You get a lot closer to professors, can get you access to scholarships, paying for school. It allows you to sharpen your skills. Working in high school becomes easier, you can judge high school debate and get paid for it.”
No criteria to join, you can just walk up and join. T/TH 3:30-5:30, no entry barrier, AS-377, FO4-153!
