Have adventurous kids over five? The Fiery Furnace in Utah’s Arches National Park is a bucket-list family hike, if you’re not afraid of some scrambling.

To hike the Fiery Furnace, you must get a permit on Recreation.gov. You can select a self-guided permit or a permit for a ranger-led hike. We recommend downloading an offline map and going on a self-guided hike. It’s a 2.2-mile loop with lots of dead ends (and some of those dead ends are definitely worth taking). The kids will love searching for those elusive arrows to let you know you’re on the right path!

Don’t go unprepared! Arches gets HOT during the summer months. Plan your visit accordingly. Start the hike early or wait until late afternoon. We went in early June and entered the Fiery Furnace at about 7:15 AM.

Children under five are not allowed. There are some narrow ledges, gaps you must jump across, and narrow places that you must squeeze into and pull yourself up and through. We did it with a five year old just fine.

You’ll need to pick up your permit in person at the Arches Visitor’s Center and watch an informational video. Do this the day before your reservation date! Rangers will ask you to wear your permit on your pack while in the Fiery Furnace.

Would you do this hike? We loved it!

4.Take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway (Pikes Peak Cog Railway) from Manitou Springs up to the summit of one of Colorado’s most famous 14ers. Explore at the top before the train takes you back down. (Get donuts at the summit and dress warmly!)

5. Visit Mesa Verde National Park to see cliff dwellings built by Ancestral Puebloans. Book an NPS-led tour of the Cliff Palace for the best up-close look. If your family is game for an adventure, book a tour of the Balcony House, too. The Balcony House tour requires climbing a 32-foot ladder, crawling through narrow tunnel, and more.
