📌SIT UP ON YOUR STATEMENT OF PURPOSE (SOP)

📌 A lot of folks are unsure on the best form of SOP to adopt!👇

📌When I write SOP for clients, one of the things I constantly do is to infuse their stories into the SOP.

📌Here's Why:

People are addicted to listening or reading stories, no matter how long they are.

One of the best strategy is always to get the admissions committee assigned to your SOP to read to the last paragraph. Most Statement of Purposes or Personal Statements don't get read beyond the second paragraph because that lacked captivating stories to glue their readers.

The reviewers may have thousands of SOP to read, and won't have the time to read uninteresting SOPs stuffed with unnecessary jargons.

But an SOP filled with stories on how you overcame odds to win will likely get read to the last paragraph, enabling the reviewer to assess your full achievements and strengths, and give you a better evaluation, than when the admissions committee stopped your SOP in the second paragraph. In which case, it will only mean your application is going to the bin -- rejection.

If you go to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), you'll notice stories about life struggles by people always get much more views than conventional announcement posts.

📌So the SOP is no longer a fact finding document, but a story document of how you have demonstrated resilience pushing through to the point you are, while overcoming odds. How you where able to win, notwithstanding.

📌Scholarship boards can never ignore stories. Everyone has addiction for stories.

VO: Why Art History?

Me: I chose Art History because it offers a strategic bridge between my background in digital design and interest in African art preservation. And I will be bringing this knowledge back to my company X, where we offer both visual and verbal identity services to NGOs focusing on Social issues in Nigeria.

VO: Digital what?

Me: Digital Design

VO: So, do you work in a digital space?

Me: Yes, I work with X as a Visual and Product designer where I currently help them design their web app and social media posters. _VO kept nodding._

VO: I see that you have a deficit of $15k+, how do you intend to pay?

Me: My deficit is actually $14, 170 and it will be sponsored by my Uncle who has been sponsoring my education since birth. His name is Dr X, a medical Doctor in USA who owns X clinic and X clinic and an adjunct faculty at the Wilkes University.

VO: Have you worked in art space before?

Me: Yes, I interned at X museum (zobo) one of the biggest art museums in Nigeria located in Ìbàdàn.

VO: How many schools did you apply to and how many accepted you?

Me: I applied to threes schools. including Colorado Boulder University, Vanderbilt University and Texas Tech and only Texas Tech has accepted me so far.

VO: How did you get this funding?

Me: I put up a competitive submission which includes my design portfolio which contains the work I've done for these NGOs alongside my essays which caught the attention of Professor X and recommended me for a funding.

VO: Have you ever been issued any Visa?

Me: No

VO: Have you traveled out before?

Me: No.

VO: Are you married ma? Sorry, I meant sir. It's been a long day.

Me: laughs, no. So sorry about the stress.

VO: typed for some seconds and issued the Visa white slip....

A successfully admitted PhD student will match with an advisor during the fall 2025 semester. From Spring 2026 onward, the faculty advisor provides the following support:
👩🏼‍🏫Pays the PhD student's tuition
💲Pays the PhD student a $34,000+ USD stipend each year
🏥 Provides funds for enrollment in GatorGrad Care Health Insurance

When applying, take this process into consideration and make sure your personal statement (1-2 pages) highlights your interests. Realize that faculty members pay for these costs with funds from their grants. Thus, the projects you will work on with the advisor depend on that advisor's funded projects. In our program, students are asked to provide a ranking of 5 potential groups they might be interested in joining and then matches are made based on funding availability and faculty preferences in November 2025 (after admission and enrollment).
