The GCGC spent this past Friday discussing and demonstrating data collection with using several geospatial technologies, including GNSS, total station surveying, terrestrial LiDAR, and Uncrewed Aerial Systems with Dr. David Holt's Geography Field Methods Class.

It’s been a great two days of sharing science and networking at the Mississippi Academy of Sciences Geology and Geography Division annual meeting! Maggie Waldron and Sydni Crain presented GCGC research, and Sydni took home the third place in the Student Presentation competition. Congratulations and great work Sydni!

Many thanks to Bayou View Elementary School for inviting us to participate in their STEM Night event yesterday! We had a blast talking with students and parents about using geospatial technologies like LiDAR and GNSS to research and monitor our coastal environment.

We had a great time sharing science and learning more about the great research going on across the Northern Gulf Coast at the 2023 Bays and Bayous Symposium in Mobile these last two days. Maggie Waldron presented preliminary findings from her project "Characterizing the Distribution of Phragmites australis along the Mississippi Coast using precise measurements of elevation, topography, and surface water salinity." We collected some interesting data this week documenting the effects of target brightness on LiDAR returns. Who knew we had so many survey poles!
