πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Daisy, Elaine, Kevin, Do kyung, Allyssa, Yakelin, Marmar, Eisen, Tori, Anelise, Ally, Jose, Selene, Nathalie, Noor, Lilian, Zanai and Emily! πŸŽ‰ You have all accomplished something that no other CSU STEM VISTA cohort has: you successfully completed an entirely year of service virtually. This is truly unprecedented, and each of you should be proud of this achievement. Despite a global pandemic and the challenges of working remotely, you worked hard to serve students across the California State University system, improving their experiences during this difficult year. You are amazing! Have a wonderful final day of service!

[Image description: The words "Join our team. Apply to serve!" are in bold at the top of the post. There is a photo under the bold print that shows a smiling young woman in a CSU stem vista t-shirt. She is pointing to a drawing of a t-rex skeleton that is lying on a table. A college student sitting at the table looks at where she is pointing. A quote is to the right of the image. It says "CSU stem vista has further enhanced my desire to work in higher education and has definitely given me some clarity on where in higher education I want to work." The quote is attributed to Gabrielle, a 2019-2020 vista.]

To do our work, the CSU STEM VISTA program utilizes sustainable, asset-based approaches to STEM education reform, including Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth Model. The traditional models of education reform focus on the deficits of students. Our program collaborates with campus teams that believe in and will utilize an asset-based approaches to examine and enhance institutional culture and learning environments for all students.

VISTA members’ campus activities, professional development activities, and discussions are linked to this model, and all VISTA members are continually inspired to view their work through an asset-based framework. The CSU Chancellor's Office Center for Community Engagement has adapted Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth model and developed the table below to include our definitions for each form of cultural capital identified by Yosso.

Happy New Year, VISTAs! In this time of celebration and reflection, we want to know: how will you grow this year? How will you challenge yourself and expand your horizons? If you are not feeling confident about these questions, remember that growth is not linear. There will always be setbacks and circles and all sorts of challenges and opportunities. How will you face them this year? Who will you rely on? Growth does not have to happen alone. Your cohort is here to support you. πŸ¦‹πŸŒΏπŸŽ‡
The Leadership Team wants to acknowledge all the wonderful ways in which you've already grown from your start of service nearly six months ago. You are all strong, thoughtful, and capable. We are excited to witness and encourage you over the next six months!
