You weren't broken. You were protecting something. A person who felt too much in a world that didn't make room for it. A soul that needed relief and reached for the only thing that worked.

The journey back isn't about fixing who you are.

It's about finding who you always were underneath it.

That person never left. They were just waiting for safe enough to come back out.

And that — right there — is the most sacred work of recovery.

Here's what sobriety doesn't automatically fix: the beliefs underneath. The ones that said shrink, smooth it over, don't need too much. Those beliefs don't leave just because the substance does.

That grief is real. And it is allowed to be complicated.

But here's what nobody tells you about grief in recovery: it doesn't always look like sadness. Sometimes it looks like numbness. Sometimes it looks like snapping at the people you love for no reason.

Sometimes it looks like standing in the middle of a perfectly good life and feeling absolutely nothing.

That's not a sign that something is wrong with you.

That's loss. Unprocessed, unnamed, unwitnessed loss. And loss — real loss — doesn't need to be managed or pushed through or prayed away.

It needs to be honored.
