We played Place Value War using Uno cards to create the largest number possible and then compared numbers up to the thousands! 🤩
This math game is fun for all ages, as the younger kids simply used less cards to create and compare numbers.

Our homeschoolers often play games and practice hands-on activities (led by a certified teacher and homeschooling moms) that reinforce math concepts, which makes learning FUN!

Our homeschoolers learned about science forces on the playground and enjoyed a field trip to the tallest playground in New York state! 🤩 Playgrounds are full of real-world physics, where common equipment demonstrates fundamental science concepts like gravity, friction, pushes and pulls, and simple machines.

In Life Skills this week, we practiced peeling and chopping apples! These culinary skills are often used when cooking and baking with apples and our kids love to get hands-on experience in the kitchen! Also, teaching children to peel and cut foods builds fine motor skills,, confidence,
and independence!

Teaching children kitchen skills builds lifelong independence, boosts academic learning, and encourages healthier eating habits. 😃

Place Value Practice

Our 2nd and 3rd graders used base-10 blocks to represent numbers to the thousands place!

Math manipulatives are physical or digital objects—like counting blocks, fraction tiles, or algebra tiles—that turn invisible, abstract math ideas into visible, touchable things. They are important because they give students a direct way to build deep understanding rather than just memorizing rules.

🌟Why Manipulatives Matter 🌟

• Bridges Concrete to Abstract: They fit how the brain learns by moving from the physical world (holding 3 blocks) to drawings, and finally to written numbers and symbols.
• Supports Multisensory Learning: Touching and moving objects lets students "see" the math in action, making word problems and complex operations much easier to grasp.
• Builds Strong Number Sense: Tools like base-ten blocks help children truly see what place value means instead of just carrying a hidden "1" on paper.

Our children enjoyed a fun day of hands-on science and learning at the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center! We learned about natural energy alternatives and how they affect our local wildlife and shoreline. The kids collaborated on a group scavenger hunt and then enjoyed a themed read aloud together.
Afterwards, everyone enjoyed exploring the outdoor exhibits and trails along the shoreline!

Learning happens everywhere, not just in the classroom! This was a wonderful day of real-life learning about issues in our own community. Our kids enjoyed making memories together that will last a lifetime. ❤️
