Backyard Science: STEAM Education with Ellen

Check out this awesome project my students are working on using their to build a flying butterfly using paperclips, rubber bands and colorful paper. Potential energy stored in a wound rubberband is converted into kinetic energy and winds its wings, making it soar 🦋

There’s a lot of options to get your into my science classes! All classes are taught using experiments and hands-on projects which introduce and explore in a fun way!

Group classes are taught in the Long Beach area and I do travel to LA for your own private classes in your home as well :)

Excited to announce that Backyard Science is approved with Blue Ridge Academy!

Paper making with flowers and leaves from the garden 🌿🌸 I’m blown away from the creativity of these kids, always trying something new and experimenting with making their creations come to life!

Lots of behind the scenes prep work goes into the I teach every week! I’m especially loving prepping for this week’s activity on and learning the multi-step process of paper making. Here’s me assembling the mold and deckles that we’ll use tomorrow!

With paper chromatography you can separate different pigments (in this case the dye of candies) into their different components with a mobile phase (fluid) and a stationary phase (paper). This experiment is a fabulous way to see in action 😉 For my middle school scientists, we varied the solvent to identify which is better at separating the dye and discussed retention factor and

Never too old to make string can telephones! These sisters assembled one that stretched 30ft long. Sound vibrations from our voice are transferred from the air inside the cup to the tin and then travel along the string and up through the bottom of the second tin! We experimented with how changing length or the material of the telephone affected the sound 🗣 Lots of laughs with this science experiment!
