Self-Esteem or Selfishness?
Self-esteem is how you esteem, or feel about, yourself. If you have been taught to accurately view yourself, that's a good thing. You know what your strengths are; you know where you struggle. Falsely inflating someone's self-esteem is never good. You have a bad surgeon - is it going to make him a better surgeon to tell him that he's a great surgeon? No! He needs to figure out where he's going wrong and work to fix it. You have an accountant who just lost your business six figures. Do you tell him that he's a great accountant? No. You'd like to make some money next quarter. You tell him to go figure out what went wrong and fix it - or go find a new job. Why is it any different for kids? We need to tell them, kindly, what they need to work on. We need to praise them for what they do well. And it needs to be truthful on both accounts.

Raising a generation of whiners is not helpful to anyone.

Start Every Day With God
We are here by, and for, God's pleasure (Revelation 4:12).

Once we understand that fact, it should change our perspective on everything; that is, if God was not already first in our lives, He should be.

So what does that look like in practice? We start every day in God's word, the Bible. While devotional books can be good, can explain a difficult scripture or give us a different perspective, a devotional should never replace reading the words God inspired and preserved for our discipleship.

As you're reading through the Bible, you can use it as a springboard for writing assignments and science experiments. What does that look like? Check out some of the essays I've written most of these were used as sabbath class lessons.

Cold and Snowy Days

I totally believe that cold and snowy days are made for reading. If you have children between the ages of 8 and 14, check out the study guides that I created and used both in the classroom and when homeschooling my own children. I wanted a comprehension check to make sure they were actually understanding what they were reading, but I didn't want to make it so difficult that it discouraged them from reading.
