Please welcome Dr. Stephen Flink to Ascent Classical Academy where he will be teaching Upper School mathematics.

Dr. Flink grew up in Colorado and spent time in his youth camping and fishing in the mountains. He studied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver, where he also taught undergraduate math courses. Dr. Flink can tell you more than you would likely care to know about graph theory, abstract algebra, finite geometry and combinatorics. He has been teaching college mathematics for the past 14 years, and began teaching high school math in 2022. He believes that quantitative reasoning is an essential skill that is most readily attained in the teenage years, and he brings enthusiasm and broad knowledge to the classroom.

After graduating, Dr. Flink worked as a bioinformatics researcher at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. The research studied genetics and genomics of alcohol-related behavior in rodent models. His time at Anschutz was a remarkable opportunity to be involved firsthand with scientific research in fields different from mathematics.

In his spare time, Dr. Flink is an avid reader, mostly of modern literature. His favorite authors include Knut Hamsun, Thomas Pynchon, Louise Erdrich, and Kazuo Ishiguro. He is attempting to tackle Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson. There is a quotation from John von Neumann: “In mathematics you don’t understand things. You just get used to them.” Dr. Flink interprets this to mean that students should engage with the mechanics of mathematics even if understanding is not immediate. In the end, understanding may take a different form than one is expecting.

Dr. Flink is both grateful and excited to join the Ascent community.

Please welcome Mrs. Rebecca Sheffie to the role of First Grade Teacher on the Ascent Classical Academy Grammar School team!

As she steps into this new position in the pursuit of knowledge and virtue, Mrs. Sheffie is looking forward to encouraging wonder and problem solving as the scholars learn math, how to read and write, and literature.

Mrs. Sheffie is a Colorado native and has been in the field of education for five years. She graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver with a BA in Early Childhood Education with a Cultural Linguistic Diversity endorsement. Prior to attending Metro, she attended Front Range Community College where she learned Sign Language, and about the Deaf community.

She loves to encourage learning as students explore the world around them. Her favorite thing is that “light bulb” moment when a student grasps a new concept and makes connections. She and her husband Chris celebrated their 10 year anniversary this past summer and like to visit a new place each year to celebrate their marriage. They enjoy attending concerts, and Denver Performing Arts events. They also love spending time with friends and family.
Mrs. Sheffie is excited to work alongside our families in training the hearts and improving the minds of our young scholars.

Please welcome Ms. Paige Walker to Ascent Classical Academy Grammar School team where she will be teaching Fourth Grade!

Ms. Walker has been teaching for four years in Arizona and Colorado. She received her Bachelor's degree at Grand Canyon University studying Elementary Education and Christian Studies. She is passionate about content-rich curriculum and loves exploring the wonders of the world. She is deeply committed to the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness through education.

Ms. Walker has a particular love for classical literature and history. Her delight in science was fostered by her own mother, who was a teacher in Colorado for many years. Outside the classroom, Ms. Walker enjoys kayaking, spending time in the mountains, and, of course, coffee!

Ms. Walker strives to live by the words of the Apostle Paul in Galatians: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
