We’re excited to share a new StoryWalk featuring Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen, illustrated by Sandie Sonke!

As we begin a new school year, this sweet story reminds us that a classroom is more than a place to learn—it’s a community where each child belongs, is cared for, and helps make the group complete.

We hope families will enjoy reading along together as you make your way through the StoryWalk (posted in front of our building)!

Why does a job as simple as returning flowers to their shelf matter so much?

In a Montessori classroom, every material has a home, and children learn to return things to exactly where they found them. It looks small. It’s not. Carrying that basket carefully, finding its spot, setting it down with intention, that’s a child practicing order and follow-through, skills that show up years later in how she manages her own work and her own space. Nobody told her to rush. Nobody’s hovering. She’s just doing the job, because it’s hers to do.

Enrollment is still open and it’s never too late to learn with us. We can’t wait to meet your family. 💚

Why does a shelf of tiny pitchers and tongs matter?

Because independence is built one small, real task at a time.

Look closely and you’ll see two little pitchers set out for dry pouring, a pair of tongs paired with acorns for practicing a pincer grasp, and a muffin tin waiting to be filled one scoop at a time. None of this is decoration. Every tray was placed with a specific skill in mind, and every material is sized so a toddler’s hand can actually manage it on their own.

This is how independence starts. Not with a lecture on patience, but with a pitcher small enough to lift and a task simple enough to repeat until it clicks. That tong and acorn pairing isn’t just an activity either, it’s quietly building the same finger strength a child will one day use to hold a pencil.

This is our toddler practical life shelf, and every item on it was chosen with a purpose. Small hands, real tools, real work and independence.

Seventeen years doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because a method really works, and because a community keeps choosing it for their children year after year. Our guides have watched that play out over and over, a toddler learning their independence, becomes a Middle Schooler who can manage their own time and think through a problem on their own.

That’s the kind of thing you can’t shortcut. Curious what almost two decades of Montessori looks like up close? Come see it for yourself. Schedule a tour and we’ll show you around. 💚 We can’t wait to meet your family!

No hovering. No correcting. Just a child, a number roll, and full concentration.

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher… is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’” — Maria Montessori

Notice what’s on this table: paper scraps and a glue stick. No template. No example to copy.

In a Montessori art shelf, you won’t find pre-cut shapes or coloring pages. The materials are open ended on purpose. The goal isn’t a matching set of cute crafts to send home, it’s a child making her own choices about what goes where. The process is the point, not the product.

This may look like a stencil set… BUT It’s actually a pre-writing tool called Metal Insets.

Tracing these shapes builds fine motor control and eye-hand coordination. The small k**b shapes the grip. And shapes like the oval and ellipse quietly expand what a child recognizes long before they’re ever named in a lesson.

This is what purposeful, prepared materials look like in a Montessori classroom, every detail chosen with a reason behind it. We’d love for you to see it in person. Come tour our classrooms and watch this kind of learning happen up close.

DID YOU KNOW? Meet the bead cabinet, one of the most recognizable pieces of Montessori math material, and one of our favorites.

Each color stands for a number. The short bars teach counting and quantity. The chains hanging below let children walk out skip-counting in real space, literally taking steps as they count by 2s, 5s, or 10s. And the squares and cubes carry that same color-coded logic all the way through multiplication and squaring.

A child might work with this cabinet for years, moving from simply naming quantities to genuinely understanding what multiplication is, long before it ever shows up as a worksheet.

It’s math you can hold, and see. That’s the Montessori difference.
