Dear LUSD Families,

At Lompoc Unified School District, we are committed to creating the best possible environment for our students to learn, grow, and thrive. To support student focus and well-being, we are adopting a districtwide approach to “phone-free” school days in alignment with California Assembly Bill 3216.

WHY are phone-free school days important?

Fewer cell phone distractions give students more time to:

Focus on learning

Talk and connect with others

Build healthy friendships

Take part in school activities

Reduce stress and screen time

Our goal is to create safe, welcoming schools where students can learn and grow.

WHAT devices are included?

The policy includes cell phones, smart watches, headphones, earbuds, and other personal electronic devices.

WHEN must devices be put away?

For elementary and middle school students, the current cell phone expectations will remain the same. High school students and families will see updated expectations.

Elementary: All day, including lunch and passing times

Middle School: From arrival until the final class period ends

High School: During class, hall pass time, and restroom use. Devices may be used during designated lunch and passing periods.

HOW will devices be stored?

Each school will share its storage procedures. Students may be asked to keep devices turned off in their backpacks, classroom cell phone holders, or another secure place. Schools may set stronger rules based on their needs, but their rules cannot be less restrictive than the district policy.

WHAT are the exceptions?

Devices may be used for:

A true emergency

An approved medical need

A student’s IEP or Section 504 Plan

A teacher-led learning activities

WHAT happens if a student does not follow the policy?

First time: The student may pick up the device at the end of the day.

Second time: A parent or guardian must pick up the device.

Additional times: The school and family will create a plan to support the student.

HOW can families help?

Please talk with your child now about the expectations and the benefits of a phone-free learning environment. If you need to reach your child during the school day, please contact the school office.

Your child’s school will share more information about its procedures. Students and parents or guardians will also be asked to sign an agreement.

Thank you for helping us create focused, safe, and connected schools where every student can thrive.
