It’s caterpillar season!

Both our preschool and kindergarten classes loved finding caterpillars in our school garden and watching them turn into chrysalises.

Nature provides such a dense curriculum. We learned about life cycles, observation, patience, care, and transformation - all through the simple wonder of watching tiny creatures grow and change right before our eyes 🐛🦋

For us at Bilowit, every morning together starts with a bracha 🙏

We pause. We notice. We give thanks.

Even the simple act of observing something with appreciation — a friend, a snack, the sunlight through the window — can shape how a child meets the world.

Parents ask us all the time: “What kind of play should my child be doing at this age?”

Many of us think children should be interacting with each other right away, but it actually takes a few years to get there developmentally. Here’s what it actually looks like as children grow:

🌱 12–24 months: Solitary + Onlooker Play
They play alone, explore materials, and watch other children from a safe distance.
This isn’t shyness or avoidance. It’s how they study the world.

🌿 2–3 years: Parallel Play
Children begin playing next to others, often with similar toys, but without interacting much.
Parallel play is social play. It builds comfort, confidence, and curiosity.

🌼 3–4 years: Associative Play
You’ll start seeing sharing, simple conversations, passing materials, and noticing what another child is doing.
This is the beginning of cooperation.

🌳 4–5 years: Cooperative Play
Now the magic happens—storylines, pretend worlds, group goals, turn-taking, and problem-solving.
This is when play becomes community.

But here’s the part most parents don’t hear enough:

Children move through these stages at their own pace.
A child who prefers parallel play at 4 isn’t behind.
A child who jumps into group play at 2 isn’t ahead.
They’re simply developing in the way that’s right for them.

At Bilowit, we don’t rush children into social play.
We create invitations, offer modeling, and give them time—because friendship grows best in a space where they feel safe, seen, and unhurried.

Play is how children make sense of the world.
And no matter which stage they’re in… they’re already right where they need to be.
