According to the American Heart Association, immediate bystander CPR can double or triple a person's chance of survival. CPR isn't just for people who work in healthcare.

One thing I enjoy most about teaching Community classes at Downers Grove CPR Ltd. is seeing the different people who walk through the door.

Parents. Grandparents. Coaches. Teachers. Babysitters. People who simply want to know what to do.

They don't all have the same reason for taking a class, but they have one thing in common, they want to feel a little more prepared. And honestly, watching someone go from "I have no idea if I could do this" to "Okay, I can actually do this" never gets old.

That's what I love about teaching. What made you decide to learn CPR?

DID YOU KNOW?

The chest rise you see during rescue-breath practice isn't just for demonstration. It gives students immediate visual feedback when practicing rescue breaths on a CPR manikin. That's one reason hands-on practice matters. You don't just hear how a skill should be performed, you get to actually do it and see what happens.

It's a small detail, but it can make a big difference when you're learning CPR.

Have you ever wondered what's happening inside a CPR manikin?

We believe this form of training in our classes. We allow our students a lot of repetition in our training. We do not just "Talk" to you. You will learn about a specific skill. Then YOU will practice the skill. We repeat until the skill is learned and performed properly.

If your CPR/AED training company isn't conducting the class properly, are you really ready to react in an emergency?

We follow the curriculum as intended by The American Heart Association, The American Red Cross and HSI: Emergency Care
We DO NOT take shortcuts in these life saving classes. Know your instructors.

CERTIFIED DOESN’T MEAN COMPETENT.

A certificate is just a piece of paper if all you did was sit in a classroom, watch someone else demonstrate a skill, and then put the paperwork in a binder.

If you come back from training and never touch the skill again, what the hell was the point?

Papers on the wall don't save lives.
Certs in a binder don't make the grab.

Reps do. Discipline does. Experience does.

This job isn't one and done. You don't take a class, get a certificate, and suddenly become a pro.

You train.
You practice.
You screw it up.
You fix it.
You do it again.

Then you keep doing it until the skill is there when the s**t hits the fan.

The firefighter who keeps sharpening the craft will always be more valuable than the one who collects certificates and stops training.

Don't collect paper.

Build capability.

You don't need to be a medical professional to learn what to do when your baby is choking. And honestly, that's the point.

As a parent, grandparent, babysitter, or caregiver, you may be the person right there when an emergency happens. In that moment, knowing what to do can matter more than knowing what not to do. Infant choking is one of those situations most parents hope they'll never face. But learning the right response ahead of time can help you stay calmer and act instead of freezing.

You don't have to become a medical expert. You just need to learn the basics, practice them, and feel prepared.

Because when a baby needs help, you want to be ready.

Have a baby or young child in your care? Take the time to learn infant CPR and choking response before you need it.

One thing I've learned after teaching CPR for years...
Most people aren't worried about passing the class.

They're worried about whether they'll remember what to do if someone collapses right in front of them.
That's a valid concern.

It's also why I make every class as hands-on and interactive as possible. My hope is that if you're ever in that situation, your training kicks in before the panic does.
What's the biggest thing that makes you nervous about performing CPR? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Every once in a while, someone leaves a review that reminds me why I started teaching CPR.
This was one of those reviews.

I know most people come to class because they have to for work, school, or a certification renewal. At Downers Grove CPR Ltd. , it isn't just about earning your certification. It's about leaving with the confidence to use it. That's why we follow Association guidelines and believe in plenty of hands-on practice.

If that means giving everyone their own manikin, practicing real-life scenarios, and keeping the class interactive... that's exactly what we'll do.

Thank you for taking the time to write this. It truly means a lot.
