Huntsman students Curtis Bishop and Troy Wissenbach played a key role in a major economic study showing that the proposed Rio Grande Plan could generate over $12.23 billion in economic output for Utah.
The analysis, conducted by the Analytics Solutions Center outlines how the project could boost jobs, support local businesses, and reshape downtown Salt Lake City.
Led by Dr. Pedram Jahangiry, CFA, associate professor of data analytics, the team utilized advanced modeling tools to assess the potential benefits of relocating UTA’s FrontRunner, Amtrak, and freight lines underground. Their findings show the plan could create more than 51,800 new jobs, support 13,600 permanent jobs in retail and hospitality, and generate nearly $376 million in annual tax revenue.
The analysis also highlighted the plan’s potential to enhance housing, tourism, and air quality—all in time for the 2034 Winter Olympics. The Rio Grande Plan proposes transforming the rail corridor into a more walkable, bikeable, and livable downtown.
The study was commissioned by Via Rio Grande, a nonprofit advocacy group, and builds on existing planning efforts by Salt Lake City and regional partners.

The Women in Business Association at The Huntsman School held a negotiation workshop on March 25th featuring Dr. Merideth J. Thompson from the Management Department. Dr. Thompson presented to 100 business students and a dozen professional guests who learned about the value of negotiating and how to do it.
Kristyn Allred shares three takeaways that benefit all of us, no matter the situation.
💼If you don’t ask, you don’t get it.
💼80% of negotiation outcomes depend on preparation.
💼When making a request, ask it in the form of a question and use the word “because”.

Many people think of volunteering at this time of year, but does it impact employee productivity? Huntsman School of Business Assistant Professor Xiaomei (Grazia) Xiong and her research colleagues wanted to find out.
They crafted a study to examine how different types of workplace support encourage employees to volunteer, how much they engage with volunteering, and how, when they returned to work, they interacted with their coworkers and helped out around the office.

If your employer gave you paid time off to volunteer, how does that then affect you as an employee?
