Pumpkin Spice & Midterm Advice at Southern!
Today, Elijah Ho**er, Learning Support Services Coordinator, hosted a Pumpkin Spice & Midterm Advice workshop in the Learning Studios on Southern WV Community & Technical College’s Logan Campus!

Students enjoyed free pumpkin spice lattes while learning helpful time management strategies to stay organized, make the most of their study time, and tackle midterm assignments with confidence.

Because college success is all about finding the right balance between studying hard and enjoying a little pumpkin spice along the way!

Southern to Participate in Williamson Trick-or-Treat at the Fieldhouse

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. – Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College will participate in Williamson’s Trick-or-Treat event outside the Williamson Fieldhouse on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The community event will feature music and plenty of candy from local vendors, giving families a chance to enjoy some Halloween fun.

Meanwhile, Southern’s Logan campus will host its annual indoor Trunk or Treat event on the same evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature candy, giveaways, and prizes.

Southern is excited to participate in these community Halloween celebrations and looks forward to helping make the season fun for local families.

Southern has been opening doors for people in our region for generations through associate degrees, certificate programs, workforce training and career and technical education. From nursing and technology to welding and other skilled trades, Southern helps students prepare for good careers right here at home. Through programs such as the West Virginia Invests Grant, eligible students can even pursue more than 30 career and technical programs with tuition and mandatory fees covered after other financial aid is applied.

That commitment to opportunity makes Southern such a wonderful partner for the Jim Frye Performing Arts Foundation. Our mission is also about opening doors, this time for K through 12 students in Southern West Virginia who want to pursue the performing arts but face financial barriers through no fault of their own. We want the next generation of Appalachian storytellers to have the opportunity to learn, grow, perform and find their voice.

Our Make A Difference Dinner Cabaret is the kickoff fundraiser for the Jim Frye Performing Arts Foundation, a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Join us Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Special Occasions Event Center in Wilkinson for an evening of great food, music, laughter and some wonderfully talented performers, all while helping us build opportunities for young people right here in our region.

Then the Traditional Nursing Option has an application end date of March 2027, and it will begin in Fall 2027.

Southern Receives Nearly $3 Million Federal Grant to Strengthen Nursing and Allied Health Programs

LOGAN, WV - Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College has received a $2,981,852 Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to implement Southern Health Pathways: Nursing and Allied Health Student Success, a five-year initiative focused on improving student retention, program completion, and professional licensure and certification success.

The project, which will run from Fiscal Year 2026 through Fiscal Year 2031, will strengthen institutional capacity and expand the resources available to students pursuing careers in nursing and allied health fields.

“Southern is committed to ensuring that students have the support, resources, and hands-on learning experiences they need to succeed in high-demand healthcare careers,” said Elizabeth A. Manuel, Interim President of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. “This significant federal investment will allow us to strengthen our Nursing and Allied Health programs while removing barriers that can prevent students from completing their education. We are grateful for this opportunity to invest in our students and, ultimately, in the healthcare workforce that serves southern West Virginia.”

Through Southern Health Pathways, Southern will modernize its clinical simulation laboratories with high-fidelity equipment and artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR)-enhanced learning technologies. These upgrades will provide students with additional opportunities to practice clinical skills and gain experience in realistic healthcare environments.

The initiative will also provide students with dedicated academic pathway specialists who will help guide them through their educational journeys. Expanded tutoring, academic remediation, and licensure examination preparation will provide additional support for students as they progress through their programs and prepare to enter the workforce.

Southern will also enhance its student tracking and early-alert systems to identify students who may be experiencing academic or other barriers to success. Early intervention will allow faculty and staff to connect students with appropriate resources and support before challenges affect their ability to remain enrolled and complete their programs.

The initiative addresses barriers that can affect student persistence while strengthening the systems and services that support completion.

By increasing access to academic and technological resources, Southern Health Pathways will help more students complete Nursing and Allied Health programs, earn professional credentials, and enter high-demand healthcare careers throughout southern West Virginia.

The grant represents a significant investment in Southern’s ability to prepare a highly skilled healthcare workforce and support the communities it serves.
