Description:
Every child brings unique strengths, preferences, and ways of engaging with the world—and these differences shape how they respond to adult support. In this session, participants will explore how understanding temperament can help you as a provider support social-emotional development.
We will begin by unpacking temperament, including the nine temperament traits, three temperament types, and the concept of Goodness of Fit. Participants will reflect on how children’s individual differences impact engagement, behavior, and responsiveness to support.
Building on this foundation, the session introduces the evidence-informed approaches for guiding play while promoting autonomy. Participants will learn how to select, deliver, and fade prompts effectively—while considering each child’s temperament, sensory needs, and communication style.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical, strength-based tools to create inclusive, responsive environments where all children can build confidence, develop independence, and thrive in play.
