How does money grow? 🤔

This week’s financial literacy word is INTEREST!

Interest is money that can be earned on money you save. When you keep money in certain savings accounts, the bank may pay you a percentage of your balance over time.

Think of it like planting a seed. 🌱 You start with a little, continue saving, give it time…and your money has an opportunity to grow! 💵📈

Teaching students about interest helps them understand an important lesson early: money doesn’t only have to be spent—it can be saved and grown too.

At STEM NG², we’re connecting math with real-life money skills students can carry with them into the future.

🎒 School Supply Budget Challenge

Daniel saved $88 for his school supplies. Did he stay on budget?

Let’s break it down using Mental Math! 🧠

📓 Step 1: Find the cost of 3 notebooks.

3 × $4 = $12

✅ The notebooks cost $12.

🛒 Step 2: Find the total cost of Daniel’s supplies.

Think:

Backpack + Notebooks
$28 + $12 = $40

Add the pencil pack:
$40 + $7 = $47

Add the art supplies:
$47 + $15

Think:
47 + 10 = 57
57 + 5 = 62

Add the folders:
$62 + $6 = $68

✅ Daniel’s school supplies cost $68 total.

💵 Step 3: Find out how much money Daniel has left.

$88 − $68

Think:

88 − 60 = 28

28 − 8 = 20

✅ $20 remaining!

🎉 Final Answer: YES! Daniel can buy everything on his list and still have $20 left.

We’re continuing to build our students’ financial vocabulary one word at a time!

This week’s Money Smart Term is Savings Account. 🏦

A savings account is a bank account where you can keep money you don’t plan to spend right away and save it for future needs or goals.

Whether you’re saving for a new pair of shoes 👟, a game 🎮, college 🎓, or something special you really want—the habit of saving starts with learning how to put money aside.

At STEM NG², we’re connecting math + real-life money skills to help students understand how the lessons they learn today can be used in everyday life.

🍎 Snack Budget Challenge

Let’s break it down together using Mental Math! 🧠

💵 Step 1: Set aside the money for water.

$85 − $13

Think:

85 − 10 = 75

75 − 3 = 72

✅ $72 is left for fruit cups.

🍎 Step 2: Find how many fruit cups they can buy.

$72 ÷ $4

Think:

4 × 10 = 40

4 × 8 = 32

40 + 32 = 72

10 + 8 = 18

✅ 72 ÷ 4 = 18

🎉 Answer: The students can buy 18 fruit cups without going over their budget!

👏🏾 Great job using mental math to solve a real-life money problem!

Today’s challenge required students to think about budgeting first—set aside the money they need, figure out what remains, and then determine what they can afford. These are math skills that show up in everyday financial decisions. 💰🧠
