🔎 : What is Prop 4? What does it have to do with the VATRE?

LISD called for a VATRE after the State of Texas took away $3.1 MILLION in funding. The funding was taken because of property value disputes between the County Appraisal District and the Texas Comptroller -- something we had no control over.

Prop 4 is also on the ballot this November.

It proposes increasing the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $100,000. This means the taxable value of your home will decrease, leading to a lower tax bill.

Voters now have the rare opportunity to lower their taxes through Prop 4 and invest in school funding through the VATRE, simultaneously.

: Why are we calling for a VATRE after recently passing a bond?

LISD called for a VATRE after the State of Texas took away $3.1 MILLION in funding. The funding was taken because of property value disputes between the County Appraisal District and the Texas Comptroller.

The reason we lost funding is completely outside of our control.

These funding gaps left us in a budget deficit of $710,000 for 2023-2024. Due to the deficit, we are unable to provide employee raises or enhance campus safety unless the VATRE is approved.

Bonds and VATREs have different purposes, and pertain to different parts of a school's tax rate.

The VATRE's purpose is not to build a new school. The VATRE will not add to the school district's debt.

The VATRE will generate more funds for the school district's Maintenance & Operations budget so that all LISD employees can receive a pay raise, and safety enhancements can be added across the district.
