Carl Grubbs was the heart and soul of the instrumental music program at St. Paul’s from 1995-2019. As an accomplished world-renowned musician, his boundless talent and passion for music touched the lives of countless students.
This year’s recipient of the Carl Grubbs Instrumental Music Award embodies the qualities of a consummate musician. Distinguished by his commitment to excellence in all endeavors, he has reached impressive technical heights through unwavering discipline and tenacity.
While every ensemble requires a leader, true leadership is not conferred by a vote—it is earned through character. This student refuses to settle for mediocrity, setting an aspirational standard that inspires his peers. His musical journey is particularly remarkable: entering the jazz program as a freshman with no prior experience, he has transformed into a versatile multi-instrumentalist who approaches every challenge with confidence and artistry.
Beyond his technical skill, he exemplifies the "St. Paul’s gentleman." He understands the vital importance of the "hang factor," consistently supporting his fellow musicians with a kind word after a solo or encouraging them toward their next breakthrough. It has been a distinct privilege to witness his growth both as a performer and as a young man of exceptional character.
In recognition of his pursuit of greatness, his extraordinary musical evolution, and his natural leadership, we—together with Barbara Grubbs and Rebecca Gellar—are proud to present the Carl G. Grubbs Instrumental Music Award to DJ Williams.
