This year, Saturn's rings are nearly invisible, making 2026 one of the most scientifically intriguing years to observe Saturn in nearly a decade.
Saturn's rings are not flat discs hovering horizontally around the planet. They are tilted, and that tilt shifts from Earth's perspective over a 29.5-year cycle as Saturn slowly orbits the Sun. When the rings are fully open, tilted at their maximum 27 degrees toward Earth, they are spectacular even in a small telescope. When they are edge-on, as they nearly are right now, they almost disappear, appearing as a thin silver line across the planet's equator that looks almost like a mistake in the image.
In 2026, Saturn's rings are tilted only 3.7 degrees toward Earth. That is close to the flattest they have appeared since 2009, when they were completely edge-on. They will not reach this near-edge-on position again until around 2038 to 2039.
The rings are not physically thin. At their widest, Saturn's ring system extends 175,000 miles from edge to edge, wider than the distance from Earth to the Moon. However, their thickness averages only 30 feet to 1 mile depending on the ring zone. They are, relative to their width, thinner than a sheet of paper. A sheet of paper scaled up to 175,000 miles wide would be thicker than Saturn's rings.
What to look for this week. Saturn rises in the east before dawn, currently in Pisces, dimmer than Jupiter but steady and pale gold with no twinkling. Through any telescope at 50x or higher power, the rings are visible but appear as an almost flat line hugging the equator. You are viewing one of the great natural structures of the solar system nearly from its side, a perspective that only occurs once every 15 years.
The next time Saturn's rings are this flat and Saturn is well-positioned for Northern Hemisphere viewing, most people reading this will be significantly older.
