🌌 A Celestial Spectacle You Don’t Want to Miss! 🌌

The phrase “once in a blue moon” literally comes to life tonight, May 30th! 🌕✨ We are treated to an incredibly rare double feature in the night sky: an official Blue Moon paired with a stunning 5-planet alignment.

Here’s everything you need to know about tonight’s event:

🔹 The Blue Moon: Since the moon’s 29.5-day cycle doesn't perfectly match our calendar, we occasionally see two full moons in one month. After the "Flower Moon" on May 1st, tonight’s full moon is our second—making it a true Blue Moon!
(Fun fact: Despite the name, it won’t actually look blue! If you catch it rising near the horizon just after sunset, it will likely have a beautiful golden-orange glow thanks to an atmospheric effect called Rayleigh scattering).

🔹 The Planetary Parade: As if the moon weren’t enough, skywatchers can also spot Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Mars stretching across the evening and early morning sky. While they won't all appear at the same moment, this rare lineup will be visible within hours of each other from dusk until dawn.

🔭 How to watch:
Step outside just after sunset tonight and look toward a clear southeastern horizon to see that large golden-orange moon rising into the dusk sky.

Events like this are truly rare—in fact, our next monthly Blue Moon won’t happen again until December 31, 2028! So grab a warm drink, step outside, and look up.

This year, Saturn's rings are nearly invisible, making 2026 one of the most scientifically intriguing years to observe Saturn in nearly a decade.

Saturn's rings are not flat discs hovering horizontally around the planet. They are tilted, and that tilt shifts from Earth's perspective over a 29.5-year cycle as Saturn slowly orbits the Sun. When the rings are fully open, tilted at their maximum 27 degrees toward Earth, they are spectacular even in a small telescope. When they are edge-on, as they nearly are right now, they almost disappear, appearing as a thin silver line across the planet's equator that looks almost like a mistake in the image.

In 2026, Saturn's rings are tilted only 3.7 degrees toward Earth. That is close to the flattest they have appeared since 2009, when they were completely edge-on. They will not reach this near-edge-on position again until around 2038 to 2039.

The rings are not physically thin. At their widest, Saturn's ring system extends 175,000 miles from edge to edge, wider than the distance from Earth to the Moon. However, their thickness averages only 30 feet to 1 mile depending on the ring zone. They are, relative to their width, thinner than a sheet of paper. A sheet of paper scaled up to 175,000 miles wide would be thicker than Saturn's rings.

What to look for this week. Saturn rises in the east before dawn, currently in Pisces, dimmer than Jupiter but steady and pale gold with no twinkling. Through any telescope at 50x or higher power, the rings are visible but appear as an almost flat line hugging the equator. You are viewing one of the great natural structures of the solar system nearly from its side, a perspective that only occurs once every 15 years.

The next time Saturn's rings are this flat and Saturn is well-positioned for Northern Hemisphere viewing, most people reading this will be significantly older.

Tonight, May 20, 2026, three of the brightest objects in the night sky form a glowing triangle in the western horizon just after sunset. Venus, the crescent Moon, and Jupiter are perfectly aligned in a rare three-body arrangement that won't repeat in this exact way for several years.

✨ What You Will See:
Venus glows low in the west-northwest, the first bright light visible as the sky darkens, shining far brighter than any star. Higher up and to the right, Jupiter shines like a steady cream-white beacon. Between them, a razor-thin crescent Moon floats at the center stage, just 13% illuminated, its unlit side faintly glowing in Earthshine. Draw an imaginary line connecting the three and you create a perfect triangle of light across the twilight sky.

🗺️ How to See It Across the USA:
Look west or west-northwest starting 30 to 60 minutes after your local sunset. Eastern time: 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Central time: 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Mountain time: 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Pacific time: 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. No telescope, binoculars, or dark skies needed. You can see this from any backyard, rooftop, or city street with a clear western view. Since the trio sets within about 90 minutes of sunset, go outside early.

📸 Photography Tips:
Capture the scene between 20 and 45 minutes after sunset when the sky still displays rich colors. Use ISO 400-800, an exposure of 1 to 4 seconds, and a wide-angle lens at f/2.8 to include the full triangle and the warm twilight horizon below. Including a rooftop, tree, or silhouetted landscape adds scale and drama. Smartphone portrait or night mode will help you photograph all three objects clearly.

THE PART ABOUT LUNAR PHASES NOBODY EVER EXPLAINS:

Why does the Moon shift from invisible sliver to perfect half-circle over two weeks? The answer isn’t what you learned in school. It’s not Earth's shadow. It’s not the Moon turning on and off.

Here is what truly explains it.

The Moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days. During that orbit, the Sun always lights exactly half of the lunar surface, just as it lights half of Earth. But from our viewpoint on Earth's surface, the angle at which we see that sunlit half changes every night. This changing perspective creates the phases.

At New Moon, the Moon is between Earth and Sun. The sunlit side faces away from us. We see only darkness. Four days later, the Moon has moved along its orbit. Now we see the edge of the sunlit half, a thin crescent glowing in the western twilight. Seven days after New Moon, the Moon reaches a 90-degree angle from the Sun. We see exactly half the sunlit surface. We call this First Quarter, not because the Moon is one-quarter illuminated (it's half-illuminated), but because the Moon has completed one quarter of its orbit around Earth.

This is pure geometry. Three bodies—Sun, Earth, and Moon—are locked in a celestial dance where position determines what we see. The Moon doesn’t create light. It doesn’t dim or brighten. It simply moves, and we, standing on our rotating planet, watch the sunlight reveal itself across the lunar surface in a rhythm older than human memory.

Next time you see a crescent Moon hanging in the evening sky, remember this: you are witnessing orbital mechanics made visible. The angle between three objects, separated by hundreds of thousands of miles, creates a shape you can see with your own eyes.

Every clear evening in late May and early June, Venus quietly trails Jupiter across the western sky. ✨

Right now, the two brightest planets after the Moon are gradually getting closer each night — from 26 degrees apart in mid-May to just 1.6 degrees apart by June 9.

You don’t need a telescope to see it. Step outside about 45 minutes after sunset, look west, and you'll see Venus shining like a lantern low on the horizon, with Jupiter glowing just above it.

What makes this special is how slowly the change happens. Over 25 nights, you can actually see the planets move closer against the background stars — something our ancestors observed long before modern astronomy.

By early June, both planets will fit inside the same binocular view, forming one of the most stunning naked-eye sky pairings of 2026.

Save this and try to watch the gap narrow a little more each night.
