Today, we at HSM are celebrating Indigenous Peoplesβ Day. On this day, we honor the past, present, and future of Indigenous Americans throughout the country and acknowledge that the state of Michigan sits on ancestral Anishinaabe land.
Our state is home to over 60,000 Indigenous people and 12 federally recognized tribal nations. Michigan has three major tribal groups: the Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa (Odawa), and Potawatomi (Bodawotomi), which make up the Three Fires Councilβare also known as Anishinaabek. While they have some similarities and share a territory, each tribe has key historical and modern-day differencesβthere is not just one Indigenous culture. In fact, there are 574 distinct Native peoples across the United States recognized federally.
We honor the rich culture and legacy of our Native communities and their ancestors. Learn more about the histories of our regionβs tribes at https://www.michigan.gov/som/government/branches-of-government/tribal-government
