The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and American Council on Education featured The University of West Alabama (UWA) in their national Opportunity Colleges and Universities ( ) series, highlighting institutions like ours that expand access and create clear pathways to lasting economic opportunity.

This profile shows how UWA has successfully catered to the specific needs of Alabama’s Black Belt, one of the country’s most economically isolated regions. From holding tuition flat for nine consecutive years to expanding flexible online pathways and developing workforce programs in fields like forestry technology and nursing, UWA is helping students develop employable skills, while strengthening the region we call home.

When Dustin “Pete” Eaves arrived at the University of West Alabama in 2003, he had no idea how much his college experience would influence his future. Nearly two decades later, the 2008 graduate, now a lieutenant colonel, commands the Security Forces Squadron at the Key Field Air National Guard Base in Meridian, Mississippi.
