One of the questions I'm asked most often is:

"How do you know which students belong together in math?"

My answer surprises people.

I don't start with report cards.

I don't start with state test scores.

I start with current assessment data.

Because what a student needed in May isn't always what they need in August.

The biggest mistake I see isn't creating math groups too early...

It's creating groups based on overall ability instead of specific skills.

Think about it...

Two students may both be struggling with fractions, but for completely different reasons.

One may need help understanding equivalent fractions.

Another may still be shaky with multiplication facts.

Putting them in the same intervention group won't solve either problem.

Instead of asking:

"Who are my low students?"

Try asking:

"What specific skill is preventing this student from being successful?"

That one question completely changes the way you plan intervention.

It's also why I always recommend using beginning-of-year assessments to identify prerequisite gaps before finalizing groups.
