LIGO Livingston is a major observatory / research facility located in Southeastern Louisiana, with a sister observatory in Hanford, Washington. We are open to the public (and free) the 1st Saturday of each month from 10AM - 4 PM, and we have over 50 science museum exhibits for people to explore.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the transition from the LIGO - Virgo - KAGRA Collaboration towards the International Gravitational Wave Network (IGWN) was signed today!

✒️ LSC Spokesperson Stephen Fairhurst, Virgo spokesperson Marie Anne Bizouard, KAGRA Spokesperson Masaki Ando, EGO Director Massimo Carpinelli, Executive Director LIGO Laboratory David H. Reitze and PI of KAGRA Observatory Takaaki Kajita (connected remotely) signed the document during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration meeting at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics in Pune, India.

This historic milestone marks the start of a process aimed at establishing a single global consortium with a unified governance structure for all gravitational-wave observatories.

The MOA is not yet the end point, but an important step to harmonize the structures of LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA towards a unique global organization and, ultimately, better science 💫

11 years since the first detection of gravitational waves! One detection changed astronomy. Nearly 400 later, the Universe is getting louder.

A century ago, Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves. On 14 September 2015, the LIGO collaboration of more than 1,200 physicists finally observed those gravitational waves for the very first time, from two black holes that merged 1.3 billion years ago.

The observation led to a completely new way to study our universe as well as the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne “for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.”

Albert Einstein first predicted ripples in space-time, also known as gravitational waves, in 1916 — but it took almost a century to confirm his theory. 🌌

In 2015, the U.S. National Science Foundation Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (NSF LIGO) proved Einstein's general theory of relativity by detecting waves created by the collision of two black holes 1.3 billion light-years from Earth.

Since then, NSF LIGO has turned the detection of once elusive gravitational waves into a weekly occurrence, identifying dozens of black hole merger events and opening a new window to the universe.
