🔢🎉 Happy Birthday to Marin Mersenne!

Today we celebrate Marin Mersenne, a French mathematician, scientist, philosopher, and music theorist whose work connected mathematics with many areas of scientific discovery.

Mersenne is especially remembered for Mersenne primes—prime numbers that can be written in the form 2ⁿ − 1, where n is prime. The first few are:

3, 7, 31, and 127

But here's the mathematical twist: having a prime exponent doesn't guarantee that 2ⁿ − 1 will also be prime! That's part of what makes the search for Mersenne primes so fascinating.

Mersenne's legacy is a wonderful reminder that mathematics is about discovering patterns, asking questions, and exploring what comes next. 🔍

🏐 1 p.m. — UWA vs. Albany State University
🏐 7 p.m. — UWA vs. United States Sports Academy

From a powerful serve to a perfectly timed block, volleyball is filled with science and mathematics!

This Labor Day, we celebrate the people whose knowledge, skills, and hard work keep our communities moving forward.

Science and mathematics are behind countless careers—from healthcare professionals and engineers to researchers, educators, environmental scientists, data analysts, and technology specialists. Every discovery, calculation, experiment, and innovation represents the work of people using STEM to solve problems and improve our world.

In observance of Labor Day, the University of West Alabama will be closed Monday, September 7.

International Day of Charity reminds us that some of the most meaningful applications of science and mathematics happen when knowledge is used to help others.

Scientists can develop solutions to health and environmental problems. Mathematicians and data analysts can identify patterns and help organizations determine where resources are needed most. Healthcare professionals can turn scientific knowledge into care, while educators can share STEM skills with the next generation.

For World Beard Day, consider the science growing right under your nose! Facial hair involves genetics, hormones, proteins, and specialized hair follicles, while mathematics and statistics help researchers measure growth and study variations among people.

From the chemistry of keratin to the genetics behind different hair characteristics, even a beard can become a science lesson.

Because when you look closely enough, science and math are everywhere—even on your face! 🧔📊

Need some new Tiger gear? Officially licensed UWA merchandise is available through the UWA Bookstore, temporarily located in the Engineering Technology Building while Student Union renovations are underway.

🌿📚 Explore the World of William Bartram at UWA!

Throughout September, the University of West Alabama’s Cahaba Biodiversity Center and Julia Tutwiler Library will host William Bartram and Alabama: A Traveling Exhibit, highlighting the life, travels, art, and scientific discoveries of one of America’s influential early naturalists.

The exhibit officially opens with a public reception on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 2:30–4:30 p.m. at Julia Tutwiler Library.

🌱 In 1775, Bartram traveled through Creek territory in what is now Alabama as part of a four-year expedition across the colonial South. A naturalist, botanist, artist, and writer, he documented plants, landscapes, ecosystems, natural resources, and his interactions with Native American communities. His observations were later published in 1791 in the work commonly known as Bartram’s Travels.

More than two centuries later, Bartram’s detailed records provide a fascinating opportunity to explore the history and biodiversity of the Southeast—and consider how our landscapes and natural communities have changed over time.

🏆🐯 UWA Ranked No. 1 in the Nation for Rural America!

The University of West Alabama has been named the nation’s best college for rural America by Washington Monthly, earning the No. 1 overall ranking among 225 colleges and universities evaluated for their impact on rural students and communities.

UWA also ranked No. 1 nationally in earnings performance, with graduates earning significantly more than predicted based on their backgrounds, and ranked first for producing graduates in fields especially important to rural communities.

An impressive 65% of UWA students graduate in areas such as education, health professions, agriculture, natural resources, engineering, and public service—fields that address critical workforce needs in rural communities.

“This recognition speaks directly to who we are, whom we serve and the impact of our collective work,” said UWA President Todd G. Fritch.

The recognition follows UWA’s designation earlier this year as a Carnegie Opportunity College and University, further highlighting the University’s commitment to expanding access, creating opportunities, and preparing graduates for meaningful careers.
