This opinion piece from a local writer presents a clear explanation of outside assistance. At Odyssey the way to help a child is to help them do the work. When a parent does some of the work the child knows that the parent is the one who won. It takes away any sense of accomplishment and robs the child. Outside assistance is the opposite of what Odyssey is about, instead of being about the child it’s become about the parent. When the kid does the work, win or lose, the kid has the pride that allows them to learn and grow.
