I recently had the opportunity to attend the Literacy and Justice for All Conference, and one of the breakout sessions focused on dyslexia. With some of the recent negative public comments surrounding dyslexia, I felt especially compelled to share accurate, helpful information for both parents and teachers.
It’s a longer post, but if you have a child or student struggling with reading, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read. ❤️

Understanding Dyslexia: For Teachers and Parents
Dyslexia is one of the most common learning differences, yet it is often misunderstood. Recognizing the signs early and knowing how to support a child can make a lasting impact on their confidence and academic success.

What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that affects reading, spelling, and writing. It is not a reflection of intelligence. Many individuals with dyslexia are highly capable, creative, and successful. The difficulty lies in processing the sounds in language (phonological processing), which impacts how students connect letters to sounds and read words.

Common Areas of Difficulty:
• Letter-sound relationships
• Basic reading skills (decoding words)
• Reading fluency (speed, accuracy, expression)
• Spelling (often inconsistent or phonetic)

Signs of Dyslexia by Age

Kindergarten–1st Grade:
• Difficulty with rhyming
• Trouble learning letters and sounds
• Challenges with sequencing (such as tying shoes or naming the months of the year in order)
• Mispronouncing longer words (for example, saying “hangaburger” instead of “hamburger”)

Grades 2–4:
• Ongoing spelling difficulties
• Slow or inaccurate reading
• Messy or effortful handwriting
• Difficulty writing complete sentences
At this stage, students may begin to feel frustrated or avoid reading and writing tasks.

Upper Elementary & Middle School:
• Struggles with reading fluency and comprehension
• Difficulty organizing ideas in writing
• Frequent spelling errors
• Simplified vocabulary in writing
Students may develop coping strategies, but the underlying difficulties often remain.

Why Early Identification Matters
Early support is key. The sooner a child receives intervention, the better their outcomes both academically and emotionally.

How to Support Students with Dyslexia
Students benefit most from structured literacy, which is:
• Explicit
• Systematic
• Cumulative
• Multi-sensory
One well-known approach is Orton-Gillingham, which is structured, sequential, and tailored to each learner.

Simple Supports at Home & School:
• Give extra time
• Use audiobooks
• Break tasks into smaller steps
• Provide guided writing support
• Focus on effort and growth

When Should You Seek Help?
If a child consistently shows these signs:
• Talk with their teacher
• Request an assessment
• Reach out to a reading or dyslexia specialist

Dyslexia does not define a child’s potential. With the right support, students can become confident, successful readers and writers.
