How powerful is Scaffolding!

What is scaffolding?
Lev Vygotsky’s theory of the Zone of Proximal Development is what we now call scaffolding. It’s the temporary support someone gives until a child can manage on their own.

With just a little scaffolding, a child can master complex skills. Give them enough support to try, model when needed, but step back so they can practice independence. I once saw this in action with a child and her floppy hat. Because the hat’s front and back looked almost the same, she often put it on backwards. Instead of correcting her, I simply asked, what do you think you can do if something bothers your face? Instead of fixing it, I let her test ideas. A week of trial and error and the trust from me that she could do it, she not only noticed the orientation problem herself, but calmly flipped the hat and wore it the right way, all by herself. Those tiny nudges build confidence, and that confidence becomes the foundation for future learning!

Sometimes the greatest lesson a teacher offers isn’t doing it for the child, it’s creating the space for them to discover and succeed on their own.
