The pair was hardly dressed like typical farmers, but this was no typical farm. Sporting white hazmat suits and respirators, Chelli Stanley and Richard Silliboy lugged 5-gallon jugs of water toward bushy plots of h**p, each 30-by-30-foot patch a stark sign of order in the otherwise overgrown field. It was a warm September day in Limestone, a small town on the edge of the Maine-Canada border, and the pair struggled to breathe in the head-to-toe protective gear. Stanley, a founder of the environmental organization Upland Grassroots, recalls telling Silliboy, vice chief of the Aroostook Band of Micmac Nation, “This will be worth it someday.”
For Stanley and Silliboy, the focus was not so much the h**p they were growing as what it was doing. Their farm, once part of the Loring Air Force Base, is also a Superfund site — an area so polluted it’s marked high-priority for federal cleanup. Later, when the Aroostook Band of Micmacs took over the site’s ownership, they found its soil was rife with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS, cancer-causing compounds that are so difficult to break down they’re commonly known as “forever chemicals.”
Because of their ability to bind to proteins, PFAS tend to bioaccumulate — building up in soil, water, and even human bodies. Under typical environmental conditions, they can persist for hundreds, even thousands of years. But there is hope at Loring: In 2020, researchers discovered that the Micmacs’ h**p plants were successfully sucking PFAS out of the contaminated soil. This practice, known as phytoremediation, could guide farmers across the country who have had to shut down after discovering their soil is tainted with the ubiquitous class of chemicals.

CANNABIS AS MEDICINE ✨

3rd edition of the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) (1851) recognized cannabis as medicine. Interestingly, the USP committee convened only once every ten years. Cannabis use had been widespread prior to the 1851 revision.

From 1842 to 1900, more than half of all medicine sold contained cannabis as a top three ingredient. It was prescribed for rheumatism, epilepsy, migraines, depression, as a muscle relaxant, to assist in terminal illness, during labor and was even commonly prescribed to children.

The discovery of the first cannabinoid wasn't until 1895, when researchers Wood, Sivey and Easterfield were able to isolate and identify CBN - cannabinol.

The hypodermic needle was perfected in 1853. As the majority of cannabis compounds are in-soluble, it could not be injected. However, morphine (an o***m derivative) could. This led to an increase in op**te use, as stable forms could now be injected for more immediate pain relief. Dependency soon followed, and was commonly referred to as The Soldiers Disease. Due to this, and an already all to common alcohol addiction, many doctors still prescribed cannabis use over alcohol or o***m.

Cannabis became highly regarded amongst Protestant theologians in the 1860s. In the 1890s, marriage guides often recommended cannabis as an aphrodisiac.

Cannabis was the number one medicine in America up until 1863, when it was replaced by morphine. It maintained second place until it was replaced by Aspirin in 1901.

Continually knocked down, denied, lies put on it, propaganda surrounds it, and still…. It continues to rise with the truth of what this plant does for the planet and for its inhabitants.

Lesson for today is to be more like Cannabis… don’t let outsiders opinions and ways of ruling get you down… find your purpose and passion and continue to rise… EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU’RE KNOCKED DOWN. That’s what this plant does. Most resilient grain producing plant that they had to name “weed” cause it acts like a weed…. Resilient… that s**t doesn’t not go away. It comes back, season after season. Just as we should.

There’s lots of money, time and people collectively trying to bring us down and make us weak and vulnerable. DONT FALL IN. Check in with yourself and be more like this plant. CALM, FULL OF LOVE AND RESILIENT AS F**K!
