*Focused* and hard at work doing what children are supposed to do… play in partnership with nurturing adults who cultivate high quality environments. ❤️

Suzanne Axelsson says that children don’t lead play, play leads play, and we couldn’t agree more. It’s a partnership of responsive play invitations at The Owl Academy.

In case you haven’t noticed… mud is a strong theme at The Owl Academy.

Mud might just be the superior open-ended material, with endless potential for creativity and development across every domain. Children are offered dirt and water daily, giving them the space to create mud of their preferred consistency, along with materials to explore (or sometimes just their hands).

Through mud play, children engage their senses, strengthen motor skills, develop language, negotiate with peers, and bring their imaginations to life.

Creative expression… it’s not just about art projects or drawings to take home and hang on the refrigerator.

This group of children put on a “kitty show,” meow-screaming to their hearts’ delight while making sure their audience knew the rules of watching vs. participation.

We love seeing this confidence, creativity, and freedom of self at The Owl Academy. This is what creative expression can look like when children have the space to partner in play. đź’›

Painting oneself can be a wonderful sensory experience! The feeling of cool, wet paint and the act of spreading it across the skin provide rich tactile input that can support body awareness, self-regulation, and sensory exploration. It’s a playful way for children to slow down, engage their senses, and explore how their bodies feel.

This is autonomous play in action—children creating, experimenting, negotiating, sharing ideas, and deciding where their play goes.

As Suzanne Axelsson reminds us, “The more we observe the autonomous play, the more in tune the teaching will be.”

An observant teacher doesn’t need to direct the play. They watch, listen, notice, and step in when support is needed—allowing children’s ideas, relationships, and agency to lead.

Swinging with peers = joyful friendships + regulation.

Sometimes connection looks like laughter, a shared rhythm, and simply being together. A hammock becomes a space to slow down, regulate, communicate, and build the kind of friendships that grow through shared joy.

**The beginning stages of academics start in our outdoor classrooms. **

Mud play. Tunnel exploration. Climbing. Building worm habitats together.

What may look like simple outdoor play is rich with the foundations of academic learning—testing ideas, solving problems, navigating space, developing strength and coordination, collaborating with others, and using imagination to create and communicate.

At The Owl Academy, we trust that meaningful learning begins with curiosity—and that the best classrooms don't always have walls.
