I love this place...❤️
Black-chinned Hummingbird
In all the time I've been in SPP (a long time) I have NEVER
seen a Jackrabbit. So, I'm wondering if you have. In addition, I found it quite interesting that this would be the White-tailed
and not the Black-tailed which would be a more likely candidate for the SPP environment. Anyway, I was excited to see it. The Great Horned Owl male was in an area I haven't seen an owl in for a long time.
It's been forever since I've seen a Yellow-headed Blackbird in the park. They are gorgeous. And, the Tree Swallows are everywhere!
"Rabbit Brush Delight" - I've always been enamored with Rabbit Brush. Maybe I was a rabbit in my former life. But, it always seems difficult to capture its inherent beauty so I decided to try putting a panorama together. I waited for the right evening so I would have some color in the sky. This is the result.
Birding along the Platte south of Reynolds landing Feb 17th
Sadly there are some inconsiderate idiots out there. Guy just let his dog p**p right in the middle of the gravel path on the Mary Carter Greenway just south of Carson Nature Center and just walked away leaving it sitting there. Wish people could ID the inconsiderate person and remind him to scoop his dog's p**p.
Carp..........it's what's for dinner!
Winter Owl on alert!
For those of you waiting to see that great, planetary conjunction tonight, this is as good as it got for me. It would be much more exciting if I could get the Hubble telescope for Christmas 🙂 In one photo, I did pick up two of Jupiter's moons. But, this was the better photo as the Saturn rings came out best in this one. Somehow I don't think I'll be around for the next one in 2080........then again.....I just might be. Have a great night.
12/14/2020 - Brrrrrrrrrr!
The true meaning of camouflage. No color additive here. Just a plain good old fashioned sunset. I love seeing a healthy Coyote!

Sorry, tubers, the river flow out of Chatfield is dropping to 10 CFS today. Tubing is STRONGLY discouraged when flows are below 50 cfs (low flow means you are not moving, walking and carrying items, popping tubes and stubbing toes, wading through mud, floating in mostly treated wastewater from Marcy Gulch rather than river water from the Platte, and damaging the river bottom and aquatic life.) PLEASE check the flow (search PLACHACO) and head to a lake or community pool if its below 50 cfs! https://dwr.state.co.us/tools/stations/PLACHACO?params=DISCHRG

Happy bees and butterflies! The wet summer has been an amazing boon for our native pollinators and pollinator projects. Native wildflowers (both natural seeds that have lain dormant for years, and ones from seeding projects that we've 'unsuccessfully' tried) have exploded in success this year. Look at the view from the Nature Center this year vs. in the past - WOW!

Fun to be so busy! Today we had Kids Nature Clubhouse, a custom group from Denver Audubon, Native American skills class, Be A Beaver, and a custom crawdad class for a summer school all out exploring . . Not to mention off-site contractor-led paddle, sailing, horseback, and SUP camps! Whew!

Turkey on the run! Look close at the base of the tree - a wild turkey is running down the trail, too focused to move to the side much like robins stay in front of you! It eventually flew across the river. It has been 7 years since the last (and first) wild turkey was spotted in the park!
