The thing I love about teaching is that it’s a job that never gets stale. This year is my 17th year teaching. Tonight was the 1st time I’ve ever done “meet your teacher” night with a power outage and only 50% power provided by backup generators 🤪. Here’s to another fantastic year in first grade.

✨ The best classroom management systems are the ones you never have to think about.

After 16 years in the classroom, I’ve learned that the strongest routines aren’t the flashy ones—they’re the predictable ones. When students know exactly what to do every morning, everyone starts the day calmer, more confident, and ready to learn.

These are the 4 morning routines I can’t live without:

🍎 1. Daily Check-In Question
A simple question as students arrive builds community, gives every child a voice, and doubles as attendance.

📂 2. One Turn-In Basket
No more sorting papers throughout the day. Everything goes in one basket, and I sort it later. It’s one of the easiest systems that saves me time every single day.

🍅 3. Ketchup & Mayo Work
“Ketchup” is unfinished work students need to complete. “Mayo” is meaningful choice activities when they’re caught up. It keeps everyone engaged without the constant, “What do I do now?”

👋 4. Morning Meetings
Hands down my favorite part of the day. It’s where we build relationships, practice social skills, and create the classroom community that carries us through every lesson that follows.

These routines don’t just make mornings easier—they set the tone for our entire day.

Can we all agree that July is a little bit of a tug-of-war? ☀️🍎

Part of me wants to soak up every slow morning, family adventure, and summer memory… and the other part is already thinking about classroom organization, literacy centers, and the first week of school.

If you’re feeling both, you’re definitely not alone.

My goal this July isn’t to rush summer away. It’s actually the opposite.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing bite-sized ideas from my own first-grade classroom:
✨ Classroom routines that actually stick
📚 Low-prep literacy centers that save time
🧺 Organization ideas to simplify your classroom
📝 Back-to-school tips that make August easier
💛 Teacher hacks that give you more time outside the classroom

Nothing overwhelming. Just small, practical ideas that help you feel a little more prepared for August while leaving plenty of room to enjoy summer today.

So whether you’re still living in your swimsuit or you’ve already opened your teacher planner (or both 😉), I’d love for you to follow along.

The ultimate teacher self-care is having absolutely nowhere you have to be tomorrow morning. Cheers to a summer of rest, relaxation, and recharging!

Teachers: Your time is your most valuable resource. Stop giving it away for free. 🛑

5 kilometers.
0 hours spent prepping for Monday.
100% focused on family.

When I created my first grade no prep centers, I had one goal: to help teachers leave work at work. We deserve to have passions outside of the four walls of our classrooms. We deserve to be runners, parents, and friends—not just “The Teacher” who is always tired.

No-prep doesn’t mean low quality. It means high-efficiency.

What would you do with 5 extra hours this week? Let me help you find them. Check out my shop at the link in my bio! 🔗
