Play isn’t a reward for finishing work. Play is how the brain develops. Play is the “work” of childhood.

Schools have it backwards. We don’t.

Schools are still preparing kids for careers that are disappearing.
Sit still. Follow instructions. Memorize the right answers. Repeat.

That was great training for a factory floor. Or a cubicle. Or any job where you showed up, did what you were told, and went home.
Those jobs are gone. Or they’re going.

AI is replacing the repetitive. The routine. The predictable. The exact skills schools have spent 150 years optimizing for.

What can’t be automated? Creativity. Critical thinking. The ability to figure out a problem nobody’s seen before. Knowing who you are and what you’re actually good at.

Schools aren’t teaching those things. In fact, they’re limiting creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving.
They’re still running the 1950s playbook in a world that doesn’t look anything like 1950.

At JSFS, kids spend their days doing the things machines can’t replace — creating, building, problem-solving, governing themselves, figuring things out.
Not because we planned it that way. Because that’s what children do when you trust them.

Here’s something most people don’t know.

The American public school system wasn’t designed to help children learn. It was modeled after Prussian military schools in the 1800s. The goal was to produce obedient factory workers and soldiers — people who could follow instructions, show up on time, and not ask too many questions.

That’s not a conspiracy theory. It’s history.

And here’s the thing: it worked. For a while. When the economy needed people to stand at an assembly line for 8 hours a day, schools that trained kids to sit still, follow directions, and complete repetitive tasks made sense.

That world is gone.
But the system is still here. And we keep pouring kids into it and wondering why they’re anxious, disengaged, burned out, and struggling.
It’s not a bug. It’s the feature — just an outdated one.

At JSFS, we start from a different question entirely: what does a child actually need to grow into a capable, curious, confident human being?

80s Day brought out the f***y packs, leg warmers, Shrinky Dinks, Archie comics, and temporary tattoos! Everyone had an absolute blast going back in time! Who doesn’t love the 80s?!

As always, participation is never required around here… but when the fun’s this good, who wants to miss out?

Field day fun!!

They competed, they worked as teammates, and they worked together as one big group! Some played every game, some played none, but fun was had by all!!

We are making some wonderful memories this last week of school!

Because when kids are free to spend their time how they choose, reading becomes something they do (and enjoy!), not something that’s done to them.
