Shouldn’t childhood be more than preparation for a career?

Every grade. Every test. Every extracurricular carefully curated to look good on college applications. Aiming to get into the perfect college, to get the perfect job.

Every conversation: “what do you want to be when you grow up?”

Not WHO. What.

And we wonder why kids are anxious.

They’re being made to spend the most curious, creative, alive years of their life optimizing for a resume (for a job that likely won’t exist when they graduate college).

They’re being told to delay living until they graduate high school.
Graduate college.
Get the job.
Get the promotion.
Get to retirement.

What if childhood wasn’t just preparation?

At JSFS, it’s not. We’re not preparing kids for life. They are already living life. Life is now.

The playing, the building, the debating in school meeting, the fishing trips, the Shore Store, the long afternoons doing exactly what they’re drawn to. This is childhood. This is life.

Happy kids become capable adults. Not the other way around.

School looks nothing like it did when you were a kid. And not in a good way.

When today’s parents were in school:

-Recess was 30–45 minutes a day. Now many schools have cut it to 15 — or eliminated it.

-Kids walked to school, played outside after, had unstructured time. Screen-based homework has replaced most of that.

-Mental health conditions in children were rare. Now 1 in 5 kids has a diagnosable condition.

-Active shooter drills didn’t exist. Now they start in kindergarten. Sometimes the staff doesn’t even know if it’s a drill or the real thing.

Yes, kids still had to memorize some facts, and obey, and be still and quiet for longer than appropriate, but there was more breathing room, more play, more just being a kid.

In the last 30 years, schools have added more testing, more homework, more screen time, more pressure…

And gotten worse outcomes in wellbeing, critical thinking, and joy.

The system didn’t evolve. It doubled down.

Your gut feeling that something is wrong?

It’s right. School HAS changed. And your child is living inside a system that wasn’t designed for children — it was designed for compliance.

Water Day! 💦

Instead of early dismissal, or sweating it out inside…
When there’s a heat wave JSFS students cool down the old fashioned way!

With the heat this week we decided to turn school into a full on water day! Complete with water balloons, slip n slides, water tables, super soakers, and lots of very happy kids.

Childhood is meant to feel like this sometimes:
Barefoot
Laughing til your sides hurt
Outside for hours
Making memories with friends of all ages

At JSFS, we believe kids don’t need to be separated from joy in order to learn and grow. In fact, play, freedom, movement, creativity, connection, happiness, excitement, fun, and joy are a huge part of what makes childhood…and LIFE…meaningful.
