RBR Statement on Graduation Parking

First, congratulations to the Class of 2026, and thank you to everyone who joined us for graduation. We want to clarify the facts surrounding the parking dispute with Fair Haven and how it impacted RBR families.

Our position:

The stated reason for the ban does not align with prior communications: Fair Haven officials publicly stated that “traffic and pedestrian safety” was the primary concern. However, the only communications shared with RBR reflected frustration with the school’s parking policies. RBR was not given formal notice of the ban or consulted about its implementation; we first learned of the restriction when it was announced publicly on the Fair Haven Borough page earlier this week.

Fair Haven’s action was intended to pressure RBR: The Borough implemented the graduation-day parking ban in response to frustration that RBR had not taken action to prevent students from parking on Fair Haven streets during school hours. However, RBR does not have jurisdiction over public roads outside school property.

Parking enforcement is within Fair Haven’s authority: If the Borough wants to restrict non-resident parking on its streets, it can create and enforce parking regulations, as other communities have done — including Rumson, which has implemented restrictions on streets surrounding Rumson-Fair Haven High School.

RBR’s permit system is necessary for safety and fairness: Our student parking system is permit-based because we have far fewer spaces than student drivers. Implementing a first-come, first-served system — as Fair Haven officials have advocated — would create a daily competition for spaces and a potentially unsafe situation on campus.

To support our families, RBR secured additional graduation parking through the generosity of the Rumson Jewish Center at Congregation B’nai Israel and the Church of the Nativity, who opened their lots to our community. We also thank the Fair Haven residents who offered their driveways to help. We are grateful to those neighbors who stepped up to ensure our graduates and families could celebrate this important milestone.

Moving forward, RBR will continue reviewing our parking procedures to ensure our limited spaces are allocated as effectively as possible. At this time, we do not anticipate moving away from a permit-based parking system.

We hope everyone has a wonderful summer and look forward to welcoming students back in September.
