Day 1 of the Elementary Ag Education Pilot Program PD Workshop is in the books! Teachers from all over the state learned about K-6 ag curriculum with hands-on activities and projects. 25 teachers from 16 schools are part of year 2 of the pilot program workshop. 27 schools are part of the overall program with almost 50 teachers! We had an excellent time at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in Providence, RI this week. Over 500 teachers, volunteers and state program leaders learned about new and fun ways to incorporate ag literacy and agriculture lessons into school curriculum. Arkansas was represented with almost 30 attendees. Traveling tours and tons of workshops taught attendees about reaching students with the ag message. Economics Arkansas facilitates a farm tour each year for teachers from all over the state. Arkansas Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom organizes the farm stops for the teachers to learn about agriculture and meet the farmers. Today, we visited Carlisle High School and ag advisor, Carley Padgett, to learn about their test plots and partnerships with ag companies to educate students about row crops and animal husbandry. Vantage Midsouth featured drones used for spraying crops.
The group then visited with Clay Parker of Parker Farms in Carlisle to learn about grain bins and harvests.
(A couple more tours were planned in the afternoon, but a flat tire on the bus cut the tour short).

The Ag Youth Leadership Summit (AYLS) was held this week at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. AYLS is an event for incoming high school juniors and seniors. Twenty students set out to explore ag careers, leadership workshops and local ag operations. Students learned about crawfish farming, cattle genetics, a cannulated steer, meat processing, teamwork, futures in ag, Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation, and life on campus at SAU.
Friendly competition between teams with ag trivia, a pool tourney and a discussion meet kept the students on their toes.
And, a $500 scholarship was awarded to the camper of the week as chosen by the counselors.
