That’s our one, true, guiding principle. We believe that Maria Montessori's principles and discoveries don't need to be supplemented, altered, or watered down. Her method has 100+ years of tried-and-true, credible experience and success on which to stand. We've observed that when these principles are the driving force in the classroom, the children flourish. At River Valley Montessori, our wish is simply this: that each and every child and young adult in our school becomes as fully engaged in life as he or she can possibly be. In our eyes, this child becomes trustworthy, mindful, compassionate, and has the courage to think and act independently and with integrity. These traits are the most common outcome of a quality Montessori education at River Valley. What makes a quality Montessori program? We think it's simple: the sheer dedication of every adult in our school. Like the importance we place on continued study and training, always deepening our understanding of Montessori's principles through her books and lectures by studying together. And there's experience --- a total of 75+ years combined as leaders in the classroom. We believe every class must be guided by a Montessori-trained, nationally certified, master teacher with several years of experience leading children in his/her specific age plane. This unique adult is the critical link to all successful, thriving Montessori classrooms. It is the foundation of River Valley Montessori. Maria Montessori believed that the most important goal of education is to shape young people to be "equipped in their whole beings for the adventure of life, accustomed to the free excersise of their own will and judgement, illuminated by imagination and enthusiasm.” That's a belief that we whole heartedly share with her. Observe always! It begins early. 💕

I sat down to give M a feed. Instead of offering it straight away I paused to observe her first..... She was looking up past my arm out the window. She was fully engaged and focused on something. So I waited... I waited for her to finish what she was doing before I offered her milk. When she looked away from the window and back towards me I asked "would you like some milk now?". I have learnt to really slow down these caregiving moments and observe first before interrupting. Even M who is 3 weeks old tomorrow is capable of focusing on things which are interesting to her. By observing her first before interrupting I'm allowing her time to build her attention span and showing her that I value what she is doing. It's amazing how much more you notice when you take the time to be mindful.
