Lee Schwander was born on March 20, 1998, 13 weeks before his due date. Weighing only 2 pounds, 7 ounces, he required highly specialized care from neonatologist Dr. Whit Hall and his care team in the neonatal intensive care unit. His hospital stay lasted two months, including a week on a ventilator and a possible brain bleed that put his parents, Johnna and Howard Schwander, on an emotional roller coaster. Lee soon caught up to other kids his age and grew up and went to school in Little Rock. He now works at Hugg and Hall Mobile Storage and will soon be getting married.

The Proton Center of Arkansas opened in September 2023, becoming the first proton therapy center in the state and only the 43rd in the nation to provide the most advanced cancer radiation treatment in the world.

UAMS to Purchase Proton Center of Arkansas - UAMS News LITTLE ROCK — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) announced today that it is purchasing the Proton Center of Arkansas, allowing UAMS to immediately resume offering proton therapy to all Arkansans.

This year, there were nearly 6,000 applicants nationwide for postgraduate year one (PGY-1) and year two (PGY-2) residencies.
