An annual tradition was upheld when the Philander Smith University community gathered in M.L. Harris Auditorium to formally mark the opening of the 2026–27 academic year.
Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr., our guest speaker, challenged students to pursue excellence without exception, reminding them that they stand on the shoulders of generations of Philanderians who came before them. He also encouraged students to develop and trust their own intellect, cautioning against an overreliance on artificial intelligence.
In his closing remarks, President Maurice D. Gipson offered a charge rooted in responsibility and stewardship, reminding the University community that the pledges made during Convocation must be reflected in how we learn, lead and serve. As PSU approaches its 150th anniversary, he called on each member of the community to help ensure the institution is stronger because we were here.
As the year moves forward, we will carry the charge of Opening Convocation with us. 💚💛
