Being new should not mean being alone. The most gracious person in the room is often the one who notices who has not yet been included.

Manners are not a performance of perfection. They are the outward signs that we are paying attention: a greeting offered, a chair held, a name remembered, a phone put away, or a correction received with composure.

One of the first skills we practiced on Opening Evening was also one of the most useful: how to offer the first greeting.

Looking up, smiling, speaking clearly, and using another person’s name may seem small. Together, those choices remove uncertainty and help someone else feel welcome.

The goal is not to become the loudest person in the room. It is to become someone who knows how to help the room begin.

Parent prompt: Ask your student to offer the first greeting once this week—at school, church, practice, or a family gathering.

The dance step matters—but it is not the whole lesson.

Students are also practicing how to listen to a partner, recover from a mistake, adjust without blame, change partners graciously, and remain considerate while concentrating on something new.

Those are not merely ballroom skills. They are relationship, classroom, leadership, and life skills practiced in motion.

Watch for the small moments between the steps. That is often where the real growth is happening.

THE GRAND MARCH IS MORE THAN A TRADITION.

The Grand March asks students to do several things at once: stand with poise, pay attention to timing, move as part of a group, and remain aware of the people around them.

That is why the tradition still matters. It turns posture, patience, presentation, and cooperation into a shared practice.

The pattern may be formal, but the lesson is useful everywhere: carry yourself with confidence while making room for others.

Our Opening Evening gave students their first opportunities of the season to practice the skills that help a room feel welcoming: clear greetings, attentive listening, respectful partner changes, steady participation, and consideration for others.

We are proud of the courage it takes to enter a new setting, learn in public, and try again when something feels unfamiliar.

A good conversation starter gives the other person room to answer. Students can try: “What are you looking forward to this week?” “How do you know the host?” “What is something you have enjoyed lately?” or “Have you been to an event like this before?” The next skill is just as important: listen, notice one detail, and ask a follow-up question. Conversation becomes easier when the goal is connection, not performance.

Preparation creates room for confidence. Before the evening, take a few minutes to review the current Family Guide, prepare attire and shoes, and help your student arrive ready to greet others, listen carefully, and participate fully.

A calm start at home can make those first moments feel much easier.

Monday Manners:

When you enter a room, resist the urge to look immediately at your phone. Look up, greet the people nearest you, and give yourself a moment to be fully present.
