⚾ From the operating room to the softball diamond!

Faculty physicians and residents from the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery recently traded scrubs for jerseys at the 21st Annual Neurosurgery Charity Softball Tournament in New York City's Central Park.

Competing against 56 teams from across the nation, Team UAMS made an impressive playoff run in its first-ever appearance while helping raise funds for brain tumor research.

🎉 Celebrating two extraordinary UAMS College of Medicine alumni whose careers have transformed medicine, public health, and countless lives.

At the 2026 UAMS Alumni Reunion, the College of Medicine honored:

🏆 Toni Darville, M.D. ’87, recipient of the Dean’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, for her internationally recognized research in pediatric infectious diseases, groundbreaking work toward a chlamydia vaccine, and decades of mentoring future physician-scientists.

🏆 Gene Shelby, M.D. ’77, recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Service Award, for his lifelong dedication to emergency medicine, public health advocacy, trauma system development, opioid addiction treatment, and support of future physicians through scholarship philanthropy.

From pioneering research to improving health care across Arkansas, both alumni exemplify the impact and leadership of UAMS graduates.

Funding Renewed for UAMS-led Biomedical Research Program, Bringing INBRE's 30-Year-Total to More Than $107 Million - UAMS News 06/10/2026

UAMS has received renewed federal funding for Arkansas INBRE, a statewide biomedical research program led by Professor Lawrence Cornett, Ph.D. The new $19.6 million award extends the program's impact to 30 years and more than $107 million in NIH support.

Through the program, undergrads spend 10 weeks working with scientists at UAMS and the UA gaining research experience and career development skills. Since 2001, 342 students have participated in the summer program, and more than half of them have gone on to obtain advanced degrees after obtaining their baccalaureate degrees.

📣 BIG SCHOLARSHIP NEWS for UAMS COM APPLICANTS ‼️

Additional full tution scholarship opportunities for current UAMS applicants and next year's applicants!

The Windgate Foundation has donated $7 million, which will fund 15 full tution scholarships across UAMS, with 3 of those earmarked for College of Medicine applicants applying to med school in 2026 (current cycle applicants) and 3 in 2027.

This transformational support from the Windgate Foundation will open doors for future UAMS students, making it possible for more of them to pursue their calling without the weight of financial burden.

Investments like this don’t just support individual students — they strengthen our entire healthcare system.

Continue working on your AMCAS application, and you will be considered for these scholarships -- as well as our many others -- as a regular part of the application process. If you plan to apply to UAMS COM this year — or later — you have a lot of support! Use this QR code to book a virtual meeting or a campus visit.

The COM Admissions Office holds standing virtual office hours/info sessions at 11 am on most Fridays. This is great if you are just getting started or have questions you don’t mind asking in front of a group. Let us know your interests in the form when you sign up, and we can invite current students or program reps to join the call.

Our Director of Admissions offers one-on-one admissions consultations/advising sessions as well. These are great if you have detailed questions about your coursework, pre-reqs, transcripts, application paperwork, etc. Availability is limited and meetings are first come, first served.

Campus Tours in Little Rock and Fayetteville are a great way to get a feel for life in the COM. We host them in Little Rock, for example, on most Fridays.

And you can meet with reps from our dual degree MD/MPH program.
